Then and Now Chapter 10 Nick pulled the car into the gas station to fill up with gas and to let Brian take over the wheel. He had been driving nonstop for nearly eight hours and was going stir crazy. Nick pulled up next to the gas pump and everyone piled out of the car. Everyone disappeared inside the convenience store while Nick pumped the gas into the Durango. He looked over to see Lis leaning against the car door. "Lis, I thought you went inside." She looked over at him. "I uh, well its a little crowded in there right now." Nick smiled. "Yeah looks that way." he looked over at the glass window of the small convenience store and saw the entire group clumped together at the cash register. Lis took her sunglasses off and thought about what to say next. She hadn't been alone with Nick much and she wasn't too sure how to act around him. In fact she wasn't sure how to act around guys period. "So are you going inside?" Nick smiled as he put the hose back. "Yeah I gotta pay for the gas. And I'm thinking I'm in the mood for twinkies." Lis felt herself go red, thinking she had to be the stupidest person on earth for her attempt at small talk. "You still like twinkies?" "Of course. I grew out of frogs and terrorizing cute blonds but twinkies are a life long passion." Nick stopped, realizing what he had said. He put his sunglasses back on hastily before Lis could look at him. Lis sighed and realized the group was walking towards them. "Might as well go before they decide to leave without us." "Good idea, Lissy." Nick followed her into the store.AJ sat on the little picnic table, munching on his bag of potato chips while Krys stole the occasional chip from his bag. "So Lis and Nick look like they might be getting cozy." Krys observed, stealing another chip from her boyfriend. "Why didn't you just buy your own bag?" AJ whined. "Because I wasn't that hungry Bone. Anyone else think Nick and Lis would be a cute couple?" Krys asked the assembled group. Nina looked up from her slurpee. "Maybe. But I thought she had a boyfriend." Brian cleared his throat. "I uh wouldn't be too sure on that." Krys raised her eyebrow. "And you'd know that how?" "She told me this morning that she thinks he's seeing someone else." Aimee looked towards the convenience store. "Well maybe this trip will give them the little push they need." Lis grabbed a dr pepper from the freezer and headed to the cash register. She saw Nick across the aisle, his arms filled with junk food. How one guy could eat so much she didn't know. Lis got in line and waited to pay for her stuff when she felt something cold against her neck. She turned her head to see Nick standing behind her holding a can of coke to her neck. "Nick!" Lis hissed, trying not to make a scene. "You looked liked you needed to cool off." He said with a smirk. "Ha ha. Very funny." Lis stepped up to the till and set her junk food down and grabbed her wallet. Suddenly she was aware of Nick setting his stuff with hers. "Oh no Frack I'm not buying your twinkie stash." "You don't have too, see I was going to be a gentleman and buy yours too." Nick said, pulling out his wallet from his shorts pocket. Lis raised an eyebrow. "Since when are you a gentleman?" "Since I turned eighteen." he joked. The cashier handed him the bag of snacks and they walked out into the bright sun. They walked along side by side in silence till they reached the picnic tables where everyone was sitting around, having a snack. Lis sat next to Brian while Nick sat next to Aimee across from them. "So what did you guys buy?" Aimee asked, pulling the bag towards her. "I got a drink and some chips, I think Nick wiped out the twinkie supply." Lis teased. "Thats right Lissy go ahead make fun of me." Nick pretended to cry. "Oh look I made Carter cry." Han got up from the table. "We should get going guys. Lis can I talk to you please?" Lis grabbed her chips and drink. "Sure Han." she said and followed her friend to the Durango. Nick watched them go. "What's all that about?" "You tell us." D said, looking Nick over. Nick grinned. "Nothing to tell D. Should we go?" Lis and Han leaned against Nick's durango, looking down the highway. "So?" Lis asked, taking a sip of her dr pepper. "So you called Boyd and didn't tell me." Han whispered. Lis looked at her in surprise. "Brian told you?" "Brian told everyone." Han said, looking her best friend over. Lis sighed. "Great. Just great." she looked over to see the group standing up. "What did he say?" "That you thought you and Boyd were over. Everyone's just waiting for you and Nick to get together." "What about you and Brian?" Lis asked, as she heard Nick hit the automatic locks and the doors unlocked. Han shook her head. "As far as I know, Bran and I are still together." They waited for the group to come over to get into the vehicle. Lis grabbed Bri's shirt sleeve. "B, did you tell everyone what I told you about me and Boyd?" Brian sighed. "Sorry Lis, it just kinda came out." Lis looked into his blue eyes and sighed. She could tell he hadn't meant to tell. "Ok, but next time try harder please?" "Aye aye!" He gave her a mock salute and jumped into the driver's seat while Lis got into the back next to Nick and Han. Brian waited for AJ to pull out in Kevin's jeep then followed them out on the highway.
