Chapter 2

I stepped out in to the bright, mocking daylight and headed to the right, down the street. The sun beat down making it unbearably hot and the humidity must have been a hundred percent. It was definitely the hottest day of the year so far.

I wiped the sweat from my forehead and pulled my hair back with the scrunchy that was around my wrist. I desperately hoped for some type cool breeze to hit, but I was rewarded with more stillness than before.

"Jeez," I murmured as I looked around, "This place is dead." The normally busy road was all but abandoned. There were no signs of life in any of the houses, not even cars parked in the driveways. There were no kids yelling from running in their sprinklers as you would hear on any normal hot day. Everything was eerily dead silent, as if even the birds were afraid to make any sort of sound or movement.

I froze in my tracks in front of the cranberry bogs about two or three miles away from my house. Deadness. That was and is the only way to describe it. As if time itself had stopped. Suddenly, without warning, a thunderous, deafing 'boom' cut through the silence like a warm knife through butter. I must have jumped a mile high as I screamed and covered my ears. My heart was in my throat, and my stomach was tying itself up in dozens of knots. I felt light-headed but kept my touch on reality. I shut my eyes tight awaiting to die from whatever was happening to me.

I slowly opened my eyes back up and uncovered my ears before looking around. I was still alive and perfectly fine. The first things I noticed was the birds were chirping again. My heart found its place once again and my tummy came untied as relief washed over me in waves. One thing was going through my mind as I looked up;'What the hell just happened??'

My relief quicky faded to horror as I looked around me. The sky was a lavender purple with gold clouds. The sun rained down red on the now black grass. I looked at the water used to irrigate the cranberry bogs and the water was a beutiful transarent green color which put me in awe. I was definatly in the same location I had been before or was I?? "I dont think I'm in Kansas any more," I whispered to myself as I took in the sight before me. Now I was going crazy! What else could happen to make my day more complete. If I had only known.
