When Roses Grow Black

Prologue

So many people hope, wish and pray to have their dreams come true. Some lay awake at night and ponder what the next day holds. Others work their way through life, living for tomorrow. The same daily routine; get up, work, go home, eat, sleep and start all over again.

So many teenaged girls dream of meeting their idols. Of falling in love with their soul mate. Of being a princess or a hero. Many are popular, and many are not. Some are wealthy and some are poor. So many different lives, but they all share mostly the same hopes, dreams, prayers, wishes and fantasies.

There's only one thing that has and always will stand in some of these girls way. Status. So many wishes and dreams cast aside because of being poor. So much hope and innocence lost to the cruel world.

I was never one of the popular girls in any school I went to. I was never rich beyond my wildest dreams. I was, though, one of the nobody's and one of the so called "losers" or "geeks". But I was never so poor we couldn't afford food. We always had a little surplus for spending. I suppose I was middle class. Never spoiled, but never really facing the worst. I was normal, sharing in everyone elses dreams and thinking they were mine alone. So little did I know.
