Beverage Service

General Information

There are some specific issues surrounding beverages on Gor that apply in Kassau.

1. There is no such thing as white kalana. Frees who request white kalana will be respectfully informed that kalana does not come in a white version, and will be offered white wines from the vinters in Cos, Tyros and Ar.

2. Blackwyne will be served with real cream. Powdered bosk milk is a traveling food, and is not served when fresh is available, as it is within the Village. Powdered bosk milk will not be offered or served in the Great Hall of Kassau.

3. Serves will not be copy-pasted, but will be written individually for each Free Person served. Speak to Lady Chloe if you are doing a ceremonial serve. Special allowances might be given for this.

4. Ice for drinks must be chipped from a block. Commonly, there is a bowl with ice that has been chipped from blocks aready inside the cold room. There are no ice cubes on Gor, and we are fortunate to be in Torvaldsland, as ice and refrigeration are completely unavailable outside of Torvaldsland without high import/export cost.

5. Sul-Paga is not available in Kassau. It is not exported from the Peasant villages.

6. Slaves residing within Kassau do not 'test' drinks, nor do they 'sweeten' the drinks with sexual juices. A slave may kiss a drinking vessel ONLY in a place where no Free's lips will touch, like on the side. It is preferable, however, to serve the drink and kiss the feet of the Free whom one is serving. (though Personally Owned Slaves may do as their Owner tells them)

7. Slaves will not use their hair to polish a vessel. Instead, use a rep cloth or your clothing. Also, the rims of vessels are not to be 'tested' on a pulse point. In other words, in Kassau no slave should be running the rim of any vessel over areas like the inner wrist and the throat. Testing a vessel before its use is a service to the Free and should never be dramatic possible death scene for the slave.

Containers & Serving

Certain drinks have containers that are commonly used to serve them. In a Home such as Kassau, those containers would be different than, say, on the plains. The following information concerns special information on serving beverages in this Village.

1. Botas are used for traveling. Beverages in Kassau are NOT served from botas with the exception that Jarl Taltos may order His drinks in a bota any time He pleases to do so, as He has His own private stock. If a Guest wishes a bota filled for Their travels They will need to have Their own. Kalana and wines are poured from a bottle. Kalana may also be served from a pitcher. Paga is also not served from botas, but is served either into individual bowls, dipped from the cask in the kitchens, or served from the pitcher kept warming on the cooking fires. A slave is responsible for refilling beverages in the Great Hall, a pitcher may be used to serve either the standard or warmed paga.

2. Kalana may be served in any goblet or vessel. There has been rumor for some time that serving kalana in a silver or metal vessel was poisonous, but this is not the case, and no special caution need be taken in this area. For proof of this as a quote, see "kalana" in the alcoholic drinks section.

3. When tea is requested, be aware that in addition to herbs, which may be steeped for tea, there is also standard black tea available. This tea may be prepared by the pot, rather than as a single cup, so that it may be refilled by the slave responsible for providing beverage refills in the Great Hall.

4. If the room is very busy and Lady Chloe has indicated that service will be en-masse for the event, slaves will be assigned a beverage to serve. There will be a balance of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and these will be served from pitchers or, in the case of paga, from the two-handled vessel with it's wide strap that a slave may use to assist in serving the drink.
