Welcome to the Using the Internet to teach language introductory workshop homepage. This page will lead you on a tour of issues, resources, and information that will start you on the path towards feeling comfortable with using the internet responsibly in your language classroom. I am not an expert on the internet, html, or teaching language, I am just someone who is hoping to learn to use the awesome resource embodied by the internet responsibly: let's see what we can learn from eachother.

Northern Regional CATESOL Conference Web Workshop Handouts (October 31st)

The purpose of this workshop is threefold:

(goals of this workshop are adapted from "national standards for technology in teacher preparation")

1. introduce some of the issues surrounding the use of the internet in the language classroom;

2. give practice with integrating websites into a lesson;

3. (if there is time) introduce the participants to creating webpages at whatever technical level they are comfortable with.

The next step, of course, before anything gets started, is to find out how comfortable you are with using and navigating the world wide web.

If you are totally comfortable with surfing, searching, slicing and dicing, then go on to task #1.   If you feel a little nervous, or don't know anything at all, check out the ESL Guide to the Internet and take the "Internet Knowledge Quiz" and the "Internet Vocabulary Quiz". If you still want some more practice, try Beginner's Central When you are all through exploring and learning, then go on to task #1

Task #1

One of the main skills needed for using the Internet productively, and one definetly needing to be taught to ESL students, is skimming. Practice that skill now by going to the International Society for Technology in English's page, choose teacher resources/project/21st Century and skim Dan Lake's article "What is the internet?".
Jot down (you don't have to turn it in, just be able to discuss it) the answers to these three questions:

1. What does Dan say the internet is to teachers and students?
2. What is the "Resource Creation Component?"
3. Name one of the projects using the Resource creation component described in the article .

When you have finished this task, let Kirsten know.
After we all have talked about the answers, we are going to go on to Page Two of this workshop, so if you feel curious, go ahead and start looking!
