***Integrating the Language Arts in Mathematics:  Strategies for Developing Vocabulary, Writing, Reading, and Speaking Skills In the Math Classroom

Teachers who use creative ways to integrate the language arts into the mathematics classroom create an environment conducive to greater understanding! This workshop encourages teachers to consider various ways for using a language-based approach for teaching math including the use of math word banks, math-related literature, “math talks”, and math journals.

This one-day workshop involves participants in exploring integration of reading, writing, listening, and speaking into math. Specific strategies are included for developing math vocabulary, integrating various types of writing, reading math-related literature, and engaging students in math talk. Each section (vocabulary, writing, reading, speaking) can also be self-standing for a shorter, 2-4 hour workshop to accommodate staff development half-days and after-school professional growth opportunities.

***Using a Problem Solving Approach to Teach Mathematics

This workshop focuses on using problem solving strategies which integrate various math strands, concepts, and skills. Teachers will examine various problem strategies and learn to determine which strategies work best for emphasizing specific math concepts. Teachers will participate in minds-on, hands on activities which can be taken back to the classroom the next day. Children's litereture will also be explored as a springboard for making problem solving come alive in the mind's eye.

This all-day workshop can be broken down into a half-day session focusing either on problem solving strategies or on literature-based problem solving.
