|
Combat is a very popular part of any recreation group, and that is very true here too. Most of our members fight one way or another.

Broadsword Combat begins with orienting the new member to our rules, and the importance of proper portection. Only when that has been done, can actual weapon training begin.
The first weapon used in the Broadsword discipline is a Shinai, this is a bamboo martial arts sword, and is very light. It's weight and flexibility make it a great training weapon for beginners, giving their bodies the opportunity to learn moves and reactions before having to wield a heavy weapon. Some members like this weapon so much they choose to never advance to any other weapon. With this in mind, the first level of Knighthood can be reached while fighting with Shinai. This also allows those with physical limitations to participate with a light weapon. To move beyond a first level Knighthood it is required to move up in weapons.
Next weapon - Waster. Historically a Waster was a beginning training weapon. This second level weapon increases the weight training of the combatant, and also requires an increase in armour. After skill has been achieved and demonstrated at this level. the participant may move to the next level, and become eligible to reach the third level of Knighthood.
Live Steel. This is the flashy fighting that gets attention! Public events are always more exciting when "real" Knights in shining armour are clanking and crashing in combat with each other. Kingdoms of Chivalry recognizes how dangerous fighting with Live Steel is. Only those members who have demonstrated the appropriate level of skill, and who possess appropriate armour, may participate at this level. |

Rapier Combat also begins with orienting the new member to our rules, and the importance of proper protection.
The Rapier is familiar to everyone who has ever seen a Hollywood Renaissance era movie. The "swishy poke" action on the screen is very different from real action though. If we fought the way the actors do, all we would do is hit our swords together. There is much more to the skill than that! Our Rapier fighting is done with a Schlaeger blade, and various offhand weapons. First level Knighthood can be reached at this level, but again, to advance to a higher level, one must advance in weapons.
Heavy Ren is the "cut and thrust" of Rapier fighting. This weapon class uses Sabres, Cutlasses and other heavier weapons. It allows the interested fighter to move beyond the beginning level, and advance their skills. |
