A Child called it by Dave Pelzer

I picked up this book last night. Mom had it in the bookcase for ages and there wasn't anything good on tv so I decided to read it. Mom came down when I was about half way throught the book and I asked her if she know if it was a true story. I was very shocked to hear that it was. You'll understand when you know what the book is about.
"A Child called it", is first book of a trilogy of Dave’s childhood from 4 to 12 years of age. His life started off happy and loving, he had a wonderful mother, father, and two brothers. They all had a nice life; family dinners, vacations, love and affection but that all changed when Dave, "The Boy" or "It" as he's know later on in the book, was 4 years old, his mother began drink heavly and become an alcolholic and also developped a mental illness. Her behavior began to change so radically. Her loving and nice nature vanished and she became harsh, cruel, and horrible monster of a person. Worse than that. I don't think there's a word that describes her completly. She would spend all day on the couch in her bathrobe watching television and drinking. Dave's life is a nightware. Just terrible.
The poor excuse for a woman, she doesn't deserve the title of mother, starved poor Dave for days on end, forcing him to steal food at his school which in turn made him despised by his classmates. Then he stole at the local grocery store but got caught and the grocery store owner called his mother so in turn he got punished.
He was also forced to wear unwashed and ratty clothes, making him even more unpopular at school. She beat him, burnt him, and force-fed him ammonia etc. She refused to take him to the hospital because she feared that someone would find out about her little games against Dave, and when questioned about Dave's injures she always made up excuses and lies or told Dave to make up excuses so no one would find out.
His father abused him in a different way: he let the violence continue or he just ignored. Even neighbours, teachers and the authorities didn’t help until he was 12.
What bothers me the book never explained. Why Dave? She had 5 sons in the end. Both parents are deceased in real life and never punished for their crimes so I guess we'll never know now.

I couldn't put it down until I knew Dave was okay even though, in the first chapter, it said he was free from the evil woman.
I'm sad to say, this is a fantastic book. Now, I guess some people are think why are you sad, if it's a great book. This happened in real life and now we are getting entertainment from it. It really made me think about my life and how grateful I should be. I cried at some parts of the book. I don't normal cry when I read a book. It's very powerful book and also put your own life in to perspective.
