The pond rests in winter, nature recovers in a long hibernation. Fish and other inhabitants in the pond can easily endure the winter, only if it is well prepared during fall and the pond is deeper than 1 meter. |

Clean the pond if necessary. Turn off any pumps or filters and remove it. The only care during the winter is keeping a part of the pond water surface from freezing. Do not attempt to break the ice under any circumstances. The fish can severly injured by the sound waves. And koi become frightened and consume more oxygen. Do not place the filter or pump at deeper zones. warmer water at the bottom will mix with the colder water in the rest of the pond and the fish cannot hibernate properly. Put the pump near shallow waters. The water movement keeps a part of the pond ice-free. Throughly clean the biological filter, if applicable, and leave drainage valve open. Remove all tropical plants. |
