DIOCESE OF ZULULAND

Cathedral: Pro-Cathedral of St Peter’s, Vryheid;[1] most recently St Michael and All Angels, Eshowe.[2]

Afrikaans

Diocese of Zululand (as granted in 1954)

Arms granted by the College of Arms under Letters Patent dated 9 April 1954. The blazon reads:

Sable, a bamboo cross eradicated at the foot proper, on a canton Azure bordured Argent a mullet, also Argent; a base Vert charged with an anchor Or.

Brownell[3] writes: “This is an amended version of the original arms borne by the Diocese from 1870-1954. The cross is clearly of bamboo and the addition of the border around the canton has partially corrected the false heraldry in the earlier versions of these arms.”

Webmaster’s note: Although the cross is blazoned as being proper, the simplest course was to make it the same yellow as the gold of the anchor.

Bishops:

Bishop E J Trapp (consecrated 1947) was in office when the diocese was granted its arms in 1954. His successors have been T J Savage (1958), Alpheus Zulu (1966), L B Zulu (1974, translated to Swaziland in 1993), P Harker (1993) and A T B Mdletshe (1997).

The diocese, which included the Swaziland Protectorate, was in 1968 divided and Bishop A G W Hunter was elected to serve in Mbabane, now the capital of the Kingdom of Swaziland.

Afrikaanse blasoen:

[1] This town was capital of the Nieuwe Republiek (founded in 1884), which was later annexed to the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek. In 1903 the territory of the Nieuwe Republiek was awarded to Natal as war reparations.

[2] Eshowe was the seat of South Africa’s first two black bishops, the Anglican Alpheus Zulu as well as a Roman Catholic bishop.
