MementoS The Railsplitter pages and some other files on this Web site, such as the pages from The Lincolnite, are called pdf files (portable data format) and require Acrobat Reader, which is free and can be downloaded at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html. Two advantages of pdf are that it exactly captures the original pages and allows you to increase their size for better readability and viewing of photos. Depending on the speed of your computer, Internet Service Provider, etc., the download speed will vary, but most likely each link may take a few minutes. Once the pages have downloaded, you may have to use the rotate function on the menu bar to get the right orientation. Then, to adjust the image size, click on the magnifying glass icon on the menu bar, place the cursor on the part of the page that you want to enlarge, and click again and again to get the desired size. (pdf) The Railsplitter, May, 1960 The links below will enable you to view the entire final issue of our student newspaper (eight pages). I present the eight pages of this issue one at a time; presenting more than one page at a time would require downloading files large enough possibly to crash the download or time out the server. After you are finished viewing a page, simply use the "back" function on the Adobe Acrobat screen to return to the page list, and click another. It's likely that after your first loading of specific pages, their reloading will take less time. Cover

Report card from sophomore English. I remember thinking it was odd that Mr. Bass had students fill in the top line. You cannot especially tell from the grades, but this class got me interested in English. Regrettably, certain other report cards, such as those for algebra with Miss Joos, have not survived. Well, I can report one Algebra II grade, if memory serves me right. At the end of the junior year, I was happy when Mr. Bass invited several of us to go along on the drive to Peoria to pick up Lincolnites from the printer. We went in Mr. Mize's Oldsmobile, and Brad Dye got to drive. Anyone who wanted to could smoke. It was a most unusual lark. Unfortunately, I had forgotten that the Algebra II final exam was scheduled for that afternoon. When we returned very late in the afternoon, close to dinner time, I went immediately and nervously to Miss Joos's room, hoping to find her and explain my oversight. She was there at her desk grading papers. She must have seen my anguish because she allowed me to make up the test on the spot, and flustered, I got a D on it. (When I took a graduate course in the statistics of research twenty years later, I did somewhat better.) And then there were the chemistry and physics classes with Mr. Luebchow . . . no road trip excuses there. |
