Dear Fathers,

It is us

Daddy’s little girl

your baby

the last of your kin

We write today

to ask for you

For you ears

For your attention

Hear us out

Please try to understand

the reasons we do things

Please try to listen

when we explain

Don’t question our choices

that we alone make

Try not to correct us

Lets us make our own mistakes

When our eyes are drowning in tears

Our face drooping with despair

Pretend you don’t see

the hurt we are suffering

Don’t ask so many questions

Or drill us with your unbelieving eyes

Trust us when we say

“I wasn’t drinking tonight”

Sometimes when things go bad

Will you take the fault?

Be the bigger man

and admit you’re wrong

Don’t put your work

before our games

Try and be there

for every school play

Be there to support us

to cheer us on

Be there even if you don’t

believe in what we are doing

Please don’t be embarrassed

when we say “I love you”

No matter who is watching

respond with “I love you too”

Don’t worry daddy

We will always be your little girl

But soon you most realize

That you’ve got to let us go
