My Calico Babies

Dancing White Cat

I am the proud "mommy" of two calico cats, named July and August. My daughter named them: July is her cat, and August is mine. My daughter's birthday is in July; mine is in August; hence the names.

July and August are sisters-they are from the same litter, born 6/26/98. Their mother is a calico also. Both cats have white tummies. July looks mostly black, but has red in her coat - she has a red "sleeve" on her front shoulder-, and a 1/2 tan mustache and a 1/2 black one!! August has "patches" of color on her back-red/white/black/and chocolate brown.

A Home Without a Cat is Only a House

An Old Russian Prayer

Anonymous

Hear our prayer, Lord, for all animals, May they be well-fed and well-trained and happy; Protect them from hunger and fear and suffering; And, we pray, protect specially, dear Lord, The little cat who is the companion of our home, Keep her safe as she goes abroad, And bring her back to comfort us.

July is my catnip lover. She has a catnip toy I can throw to her, and she'll jump up in the air and catch it. She even brings it to me when she wants to play. When she was little, she used to curl up next to my shoulder in bed, and knead my hair and purr. She still does this occassionally, but not very often. Otherwise, she's not a very affectionate kitty, unless she wants to eat! Also, sometimes, she'll be napping, and when you walk by her, she'll meow. That means she wants you to pet her. When she does want to be petted, you can hear her purring really loudly! Or, if you are on the computer, she will jump up and watch the cursor on the screen. She's also been known to get close to the TV when football games are on.

She also seems to love men. She'll roll over on her back when her Daddy walks by, and wait for him to pet her. She likes sleeping with her older human brother. One morning he woke up to find her sitting on his chest!

August was the more aloof kitten, but she's the lover kitty now. She sleeps on my pillow above my head, and kneads my hair when it's breakfast time. Recently, she has taken to kneading my hair, and purring right after I lay down to go to sleep at night. She'll usually fall asleep on my pillow. August's purr is very quiet. You only know she's purring because you can feel her vibrating against the pillow! It's the only time she purrs.

August follows me around the house. She's the larger of the two female cats, and definitely the dominant cat (well until Shady came along!). So, following me around is her exercise. She, too, likes to watch TV.

August has also discovered she can get up into the drop ceiling in our basement. She runs across the ceiling, and you can hear her both upstairs and down. One day, my daughter called me at work, and she said, "I think somebody just got the surprise of their life!" And I asked her what she meant. She told me she came home and went into the basement. As she was walking down the hall, she noticed ceiling tiles on the floor. Our cat, August, likes to climb into the drop ceiling in the basement. Apparently, she finally found the part of the ceiling that couldn't hold her weight! (She wasn't even hurt, either!) Her Daddy said he would fix it so she can't get up there anymore!

My cats like "kitty TV" too. They love to sit on my bed, and look out the window. We "turn on the TV" by opening the curtains!

In order for July to eat, we have to put July and her food dish in our bedroom, and close the door. August then turns into Miss Affectionate until we open the door to the bedroom and let her in there. Of course, she isn't allowed in our bedroom, until July is finished her dinner.

Will you Save a Stray ? July and August may not be thrilled, but they have a new little brother. His name is Shady, and he came from Pets 4 Pets , a no-kill rescue organization. Please save others like him. He is the most affectionate cat in the world!!! His site is up: Shady .

An Inside Cat is a Safe Cat

My little girls are indoor kitties.

Spay/Neuter Your Pets

They are also spayed. I didn't want to worry about my babies walking around the neighborhood, nor did I want to have to worry about finding homes for kittens.

Vaccinate Yearly

I keep their vaccinations up-to-date, just in case they get outside, but I hope that doesn't happen. When you love your cats, you take the best possible care of them you can.

My vet told me that they are re-evaluating giving the Feline Leukemia vaccine to cats that test negative for Feline Leukemia, never go outside, and the owner has no plans of getting more cats. She told me there is a 1 in 10,000 chance the cat could get a tumor like cancer at the injection site. The vet recommended that we discontinue the vaccine for my girls, since they never go outside, and I am not planning on acquiring more cats. Has anyone else heard this? If so, please leave a note in my guestbook. Thank-you.

I am also very careful what kind of cat toys I buy. Many of the "eyes" on the toys are actually plastic pins - something a kitty could easily swallow. We have managed to pull those pieces out of the toys before we gave them to the babies. Now, I try not to buy them at all. I try to look at a toy, and ask myself if it is made safely enough to be safe for a baby human. If not, then it's probably not made safely enough for cats, either.
