Frequently Asked Questions on MacauNet

Q. How can I join the MacauNet mailing list?
A. You can fill out the
registration form on this web site or send an email to macau@cco.caltech.edu with "subscription" on your subject line. Please DO NOT send any subscription request to macaunet@cco.caltech.edu as it will be forwarded to every member on our mailing list--which is not a very good way to make a first-impression :)

Q. I am now in the U.S. and I hold a Portuguese passport/Macau CI. Do I need a visa to go to Canada? If so, how/where can I get one?
A. If you are holding a Portuguese passport, you will need to apply for a visitor visa. Write to the following address and include a self-addressed self-stamped envelope for an application form:

Immigration Section
Canadian Embassy
501 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W.
Washington, DC 20001

It takes only about a week to receive the form from the embassy. You can just follow the instructions on the form. One thing worth noticing is that Portuguese passport holders do not have to pay the processing fee, although it is not mentioned. After filling the forms you will have to send your passport, I-94 and I-20 to the embassy. Make sure you use certified mail to ensure security.

Just read the Macau Daily homepage. There's an article regarding the new agreement between the Canadian government and the Portuguese government -- starting from May 1, Portuguese passport holders no longer need to apply for the visitor's visa. What a good news! -- Oscar Ho at Kansas City, USA
Note: CI holder needs to pay the processing fee of forty something US dollars(???)

Check the Canadian Consulate homepage at:

It is very informative.

Q. How I can apply for a Taiwan visa in Canada?
A. If you've a Potuguese passport, you don't have to get a Visa (or what is called an "entry permit"?) for up to two weeks of stay in Taiwan as far as I know. The Portuguse government signed a treaty with Taiwan some time in 1995 which made this happen.

Q. What's that U.S. Green Card Lottery thing all about? Am I eligible to enter?
A. See
http://www.imminfo.com for details.

Q. Where can I get some Macau news? Any Macau newspaper on-line?
A. If you are a member of MacauNet email forum, you will receive some Macau news by email, from time to time.
Macau Daily News has set up a web site at the University of Macau. They update the page daily. Also, you can go visit some Hong Kong newspaper web sites for up-to-date China/HK/Macau news. Take a look at our Link List to find out their web page addresses.

Q. Could any body tell me how to have a Portuguese passport renewed in UK/England?
A. Well, if you are in London, (or I think you have to travel to London), you could go to the Portuguese consulate in Knightsbridge (opposite Harrods). You have to bring all the documents you have got, have you registered in a consulate before? You have to do that.

I think there should be a Portuguese Embassy in San Francisco, call 411 and tell them San Francisco, they should be able to give you the number at SF.
