AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL RESCUE LETTERS |
A.I.R.’ S LETTER TO THE PRIME MINSTER OF AUSTRALIA Dear Sir: This is a letter applying for approval to start up an AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL RESCUE (A.I.R.) team in Queensland and then the rest of Australia in years to come; the group will be a non – profit and non – government organization and a registered charity. The A.I.R. needs permission, as the team will be going overseas on disaster work eg. Earthquakes and bombings and to relieve the poverty and promote the health and safety of persons by initiating or supporting humanitarian projects to be offered to foreign countries and or specialist agencies enabling them to respond swiftly and effectively to the disaster site. This will be a 100% free service to any country, individual, or victim of disaster anywhere in the world, regardless of race, religion, or any other reasonable consideration. A.I.R. is a volunteer organization and will survive on donations and grants from the government and private enterprise or through sponsorship; in the future A.I.R. hopes to be a tax-deductible charity. If you or someone in your team can help with this, I would very much appreciate the assistance, I can be contacted by email: rescueaus@optusnet.com.au or Mail: 3 MITCHELL STREET RIVERVIEW QLD 4303 Sincerely, Matthew Mac Kellar |
Letter Back from the Minister for Defence OFFICE OF THE MINISTER FOR DEFENCE 11 APR 2001 Mr Matthew MacKellar 3 Mitchell Street RIVERVIEW QLD 4303 Dear Mr MacKellar Thank
you for your e‑mail messages of 3 March 2001 to the Prime Minister and 18
March 2001 to the Minister for Defence seeking approval for the establishment
of Australian International Rescue in Australia. The Hon Peter Reith MP has
asked me to respond on his behalf. There
is no legislative requirement for the Commonwealth Government to provide
approval for you to establish Australian International Rescue. However, in
order for the organisation to be considered eligible to compete for possible
future employment by the Commonwealth Government, it will require appropriate
accreditation and recognition. There are also standards prescribed by the
International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) if it is to be
considered for possible international search and rescue tasks. INSARAG is
managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian
Affairs, based in Geneva. Given
that you are in Queensland, 1 would suggest that you liaise with the Queensland
Department of Emergency Services about special requirements that States and
Territories may have in regard to the employment of organisations such as
Australian International Rescue. I
commend you on your initiative and wish you well with the establishment of
Australian International Rescue. Yours sincerely MIKE SCRAFTON Senior Adviser Parliament House, Canberra ACT 2600. Tel: (02) 6277
