Redwall - It started a series-well, sort of. The first book's worth a read, the rest... aren't.
The Neverending Story - My first favorite. Don't judge it by the movie (especially the sequels).
Watership Down - A bit off the beaten track, this book is still excellent.

The Princess Bride - Loved the movie? Read the book-then you can make references to it!
