If You See Him …

Disclaimer:   Paramount own Star Trek and everything connected to it.

The song that has influenced this fanfic belongs to MCA Records, featured on the album “If You See Him” by Reba McEntire and is a duet by her and Brookes and Dunn.  I just wanted to borrow both.

Author’s note:  Heard this song and had to write the following!!  I’m not sure if I’ve seen this song featured somewhere before, apologies if I have, but couldn’t rest until I’d written it!!!  I’ve used the lyrics as part of the character’s voices and these are shown with italics

Janeway and B’Elanna sat watching the children playing happily in the garden.  Their shrieks of laughter travelled on the still air to where the two women sat.  They both sat in easy chairs under the shade of a large parasol.  A half empty pitcher of cold lemonade and a plate of half-eaten cookies sat on the table in front of them.   Kathryn looked cool despite the heat, wearing a simple pale blue dress and dark sunglasses.  B’Elanna noticed how thin and drawn she appeared.  Her and Tom were both worried about her.  Kathryn didn’t notice her friend’s worried gaze, instead she watched as the children chased each other around the rose bushes a slight smile formed on her lips.  When she spoke her voice was low and filled with sadness.

“Sometimes…I wish that Chakotay and I had had children…he would have been a good father…maybe things would have turned out differently…”

She shook her head.  B’Elanna placed a hand over hers, squeezing it.

“Kathryn…”

“You know he wants a divorce?”

B’Elanna nodded not knowing what to say.

“How are you doing?”

“I know it’s for the best…but…oh….”

A tear rolled down her cheek from under the sunglasses.

On the other side of town, Chakotay sat in his apartment, the French doors open blowing a pleasant breeze into the room.  He opened the can of beer that Tom Paris and passed him taking a long gulp.  Tom looked around the room, noticing the packing crates, still in the corner of the room.   They’d been in the same place ever since Chakotay had moved in eight months ago, after him and Kathryn had split up.  It saddened Tom, watching his two best friends going through hell.  Deep down he was just a romantic and had hoped that they would patch things up.  After all, they were made for each other.  Tom and B’Elanna were the witnesses at their wedding, was it really just eighteen months ago since they’d been that happy?  The four of them had been such good friends since getting back to Earth, but now, the split had affected everyone.  Him and B’Elanna had felt torn from the start.

He looked at Chakotay, he’d seen him look better.  The dark circles under his eyes told of his sleepless nights.  He had an air of defeat about him these days, like a man who had lost something so precious and yet couldn’t find it again.  Tom opened his can of beer and took a swig.

“Hey, big man, isn’t it about time you done something about those boxes over there?”

“I’ll get around to it…”

Chakotay took another drink

“Wasn’t B’Elanna coming with the kids?”

“She’s gone to see Kathryn…”

“Oh...”

“We’re worried about her, about both of you…we don’t like to see you like this…you’re both unhappy Chakotay…”

“Kathryn why don’t you try to talk to him?  I know that…”

“No...”

“But…he’s…”

“If you see him, tell him I wish him well…How am I doing?  Well sometimes it’s hard to tell…I still miss him more than ever…But please don’t say a word…If you see him…If you see him…

“Chakotay, you must have something you want to say to her?  Just go and tell her you love her…”

“If you see her, tell her I’m doing fine…And if you want to, say that I think of her from time to time…Ask her if she ever wonders where we both went wrong…If you see her…If you see her…”

Chakotay stood and paced the room, running his fingers through his hair

“Oh I still want her…”

“And I still need him so…”

Chakotay softened

“If you see her…tell her the light’s still on for her…”

Kathryn removed her sunglasses, her eyes swollen from crying and looked B’Elanna in the eyes.

“Nothing’s changed deep down the fire still burns for him…”
