Magic
No, I am not about to go giving you spells. You've likely heard a million times before that they work best when they are personal to the user. It's true.
What I'm doing here is giving you ideas, as inspiration is worth infinitely more than a this-is-this and that-is-that lesson, in my opinion.
I have found symbols to be very important. Think about it, this even carries over to the everyday version of things. Emoticons are the most recently divised symbol. They're little faces that represent human emotion. So when you decide to use something, make sure it has meaning. If not to everyone, then to you. Nothing is more powerful than a symbol with deep personal meaning. This may cause you to use the symbol differently, however. For example, I would be less likely to use a rose for a spell involving love, because to me the rose represents my departed friend  Amy. It is for me a symbol of remembrance and friendships that have passed. It also makes it all the more necessary I write my own spells and recipes, because of the different meaning.
June 15, 2004: I had a stroke of genius while riding in the car. I was staring at my nails at a traffic light and started thinking about blue, their current color. This started me thinking, why did I paint them blue in particular? And it hit me.  Nail Magic!
Nail magic is painting your nails a certain color whose properties you'd like to attract. After thinking about and selecting your color, set down in a quiet space (or with magical music for you). Roll the bottle in your hands to stir the color back together, and as you are doing this, ask the God and Goddess (or whoever of your choice, perhaps one whose color you're employing)  to bring you/ rid you of _______. Begin to paint your nails, keeping your goal in mind, or whatever magic works for you. As I've said before, what is always important is not the ritual itself, but that it works for you.
If all else fails, ask a cat! They are extremely wise creatures, and very helpful if you learn how to ask.
If you screw something up or run into troubles during ritual, just laugh and, if you feel it to be necesary, apologize to the spirits, etc. and move on.
We would not have been given laughter if we weren't expected to use it now and then!
Look around you for answers when you're stumped on ingredients or words for an incense or spell. Nature speaks, and answers questions, too. Just be patient and keep your eyes, ears, mind, etc. open and it'll come to you one way or another.
Tip for those of you who are just starting and have not yet acquired all the tools that typically represent the elements or those of you who have lost or misplaced one of your tools: use Tarot cards.
I've used the aces of each of the minor arcana, since they all correspond to an element and a direction, but you can use whichever cards work best for you. It may not be wise to use a card which contradicts what you are attempting with the ritual, however.
