Chapter 18 One Week Later Sky was sound asleep when the phone rang. "Sky", Josie called from the doorway. "Huh?", Sky mumbled half asleep. "Phone……it’s the hospital.", Josie said as she handed her sister the phone. Sky grabbed the phone and sleepily said, "Hello?" Josie walked out of the room. "Hey.", the voice said. Sky was confused until she realized that she had been tricked by Josie. It wasn’t the hospital, it was Jeff. ‘I’m going to kill her’, she thought to herself. She didn’t know what to say at first. "Did I wake you?" "Yeah……..I’m sorry Josie told me it was the hospital. I didn’t expect it to be you." "Oh……………I just wanted to call and see how you’ve been." "I’m fine. What about you?" "Tired, but other than that okay." Sky kept yawning. "That’s good." "Well, I can tell you’re tired, so I’ll let you go." "Okay. Thanks for calling." "Yeah, sure. Bye." "Bye." She hung up the phone. "You are SOOOOO dead!", she yelled as she began to laugh. She could hear Josie laughing from the other room. Sky had spent the last week pondering what Josie had said to her about ending up alone. Although she was scared of being hurt, Sky was growing more and more aware of what she might be giving up. She was almost ready to give in. The genuine sweetness in his ever sexy voice still echoed in her head. She smiled as she snuggled into her pillow and soon fell back asleep. The Next Night Sky was working her normal shift in the ER. "There’s a trauma coming in.", Randi told her as she placed some charts onto the shelf, "car accident. It’s pretty bad evidentially. The air wing is bringing them in." "Great!", Sky said, "It always happens when I’m on duty." Sky waited at the elevator for the nurses to bring the victim down from the roof. The elevator doors opened and she was suprised to see that Dr. White, the on call doctor, was working diligently on the patient. "I’ll take it from here.", she said as the stretcher was wheeled off of the elevator. "I don’t think that’s a good idea.", Dr. White said as he looked at Sky with great sadness showing on his face, "It’s your sister." Everything around her seemed to disappear. She watched almost with tunnel vision as they wheeled Josie, covered in blood, into the trauma room. "No, it can’t be.", she said as she made her way into the room. She put on some gloves and jumped right into the chaos. She held herself together as she began to help work on the patient. She was fine until she looked up and realized that it really was Josie. She stood in shock as she stared at her sister who lied helpless on the table. "Either help or get out of the way!", Dr. White insisted. She could feel her stomach churning as her nervous system began to attack her. She ran out of the room and straight to the bathroom. When she had nothing left to throw up, she stood up and washed her face. "Snap out of it Sky.", she said to herself in the mirror, "She needs you to be strong. You can’t fall apart now." But how could she be strong? Her little sister lied only a few feet away, fighting for her life. She was all that Sky had. She sucked up her feelings. Then her determination and adrenaline kicked in. She walked back into the trauma room and got right back into the procedure. Dr. White looked at her, "You know it’s not right for you to work on her." "So, take away my license! But, first, we have a patient to save, Doctor.", she said very firmly. And with that, they both worked with all of their might to repair Josie’s injuries and save her life. Last Chapter ..*..
