Chapter 19

"Thank you.", Sky said as she shook Dr. White’s hand.  "Your welcome.", he said as he placed a hand on her shoulder, "She was lucky that you were there."  Sky smiled and turned to watch as they rolled Josie onto the elevator yet again.  This time, she was headed to intensive care, and in better condition than the first time she was put on that elevator.

Sky sat down on the curb outside the ER entrance.  How she wished that Jeff was there, again, to ask her if she was okay.  "I have to call Matt.", she said, realizing that he would want to know about Josie.  But, she didn’t have his phone number.  She didn’t hesitate as she dialed Jeff’s cell phone number.
  "Hello?"
  "Jeff, it’s Sky."
Her voice began to crack as she broke down crying.
  "Sky?  What’s wrong?"
  "It’s Josie.  Where’s Matt?"
  "He’s right here, hold on."
He handed the phone to Matt and she told him what had happened.
  "I’m on the next plane."
He handed the phone back to Jeff, but Sky had already hung up.  "I’m going with you.", Jeff said to his brother, "you can tell me what’s up on the way to the airport."  They threw their things into their bags and headed out the door.

Sky sat beside her sister’s bed and held her hand.  She cried as she spoke softly to Josie, "You have to pull through this.  I can’t do it without you.  You’re all I’ve got.  We made a pact that we’d always be together.  And together we can make it through anything.  Remember?  That’s what we said.  I’m going to stay here until you wake up.  That way, we’re doing this together."  She stopped talking because she was sobbing so hard that she couldn’t speak.  She calmed herself a little, "Besides, you have to stick around and aggravate the hell out of me.  Not one single day would be the same without one of your little smart ass remarks."  She laughed a little as she thought about the many times that Josie had smarted off or just plain aggravated her.  "I love you Josie.  You can pull through this.  I know you can.", she said as she laid her head down on the side of the bed.  The beep of the monitors and humming of the machines combined with shear exhaustion, put Sky right to sleep.

Sky jumped as the nurse shook her gently, "What is it?  What’s wrong?"  "There are two gentlemen here to see Josie, but they say their not family.  And you know the rules.", the nurse said.  "It’s okay.  They’re close enough.  I’ll be right out.", she said.   "She’s gonna make it just fine.", the nurse said smiling as she walked out the door.  "Thanks.", Sky returned as she stood up and stretched.  She walked over to the sink and washed her face.  She smoothed out her hair and took a deep breath.  She walked out to the waiting room to see a very distressed Matt.  She explained Josie’s condition to him and prepared him to go in.  "Thanks for calling me.", Matt said as he hugged her.  "You’re welcome.  You can go in now.", she said as she hugged him back.  She turned to go to the nurse’s station but stopped in her tracks when she saw Jeff asleep in the chair in the corner.
