Chapter 4 |
"So, it must have been tough raising your sister and going to medical school, huh?", he asked. "Yeah, it was, but…….hey, no you don’t. I just sat here and spilled my guts. I think I should get something in return.", she said. Jeff looked very puzzled, "Like what?" "Like, it’s your turn to tell me something devastating from your past.", she said with a smile. "No, I want to hear more about you first.", he said. "Nope, not until you tell me one of your deep dark secrets.", she said, "It’s only fair. Don’t you think?" And with that, Jeff told Sky all about losing his mother to cancer when he and Matt were younger. How his dad had raised them alone. Although he hadn’t been left completely parentless, the fact that he too had lost his mother seemed to make her feel closer to him. Almost as if it was something they shared. She could sense the bond that was starting to form between the two of them. They stared silently into each others eyes. Speaking to each other without words. The comfort they found in each others tragedy. Ring………….ring……………..ring. Sky snapped out of her daze to realize it was her cell phone ringing. "Hello?" "Hey sis!", Josie said almost yelling over the loud music in the background., "I need a favor." "What now?" "I left my driver’s license in my jeans that I wore last night. Would you go home and get it and bring it to me?" "You want me to drive all the way home and then all the way back down here just so you can have your driver’s license?" "Yeah. You know I gotta have it. If we get busted for some reason and I don’t have my id, then we could lose our liquor license." "Well, than that would teach you to keep up with your stuff , then huh?" "Look, just go get it for me! PLEASE!" "Okay, but you owe me….Big time!" She hung up her phone. "That girl, I swear.", she said shaking her head, "she’d lose her head if it wasn’t attached." "Who’s that?", Jeff asked. "Josie. As much as I hate to go, I gotta go home and get something for her.", she said disappointedly. "Okay. Well, I’ll just catch a cab back to the hotel.", he said looking out the window. "You didn’t even touch your coffee.", Sky said as she grabbed the mug that sat in front of Jeff, still full. "I don’t drink coffee.", he said as he turned and smiled at her. "Then why did you ask me to go have coffee with you?", she asked. "It worked didn’t it.", he said as he flashed her a sexy grin. She smiled, blushing slightly. She thanked him for the coffee and the company. They said "Goodbye." She placed her hand on the door knob and stopped just as she began to turn the knob. She couldn’t leave him there. She didn’t want to leave him there for fear that she might never see him again. She turned and walked back to the table. Jeff was staring out the window again. He could see her reflection in the window, but didn’t acknowledge that she had returned to the table. "Do you want to come with me?", she asked in a soft voice. He smiled and turned to look at her, "I thought you’d never ask." He stood up and dropped some money on the table. They walked back down the street to the hospital parking lot. They got into Sky’s black corvette and pulled off, headed for her house. Jeff chuckled as he said, "I have this same exact car at home." Sky just smiled at him. |
