Chapter 16

Jeff walked through his front door and threw his keys on the table.  "Jeff?", Kristin called from the living room.  "Yeah", he mumbled.  She stood up as he walked into the room.  She could see that something was bothering  him by his distant stare.  "Jeff?  Are you okay?", she asked with concern.  "Yeah", he mumbled again.  He wasn’t paying much attention to her because he was lost in his own thoughts.  He couldn’t believe that he would never talk to Sky again.  Although he had only known her for a very short time, he knew that she was special.  He knew that she was the one for him.  The pain that was filling his heart was like nothing he had ever known.  Could it be true?  Could he have fallen in love with her?  He realized that he had done just that.  "Who’s Sky?", Kristin asked.  "What?", he said as her name snapped him out of his daze.  "Who’s Sky?", she asked again.  He sat there for a moment.  How could he tell her who Sky was?  How could he tell her that he had fallen for her and now he had lost her?  How could he explain the feelings that were brewing inside of him?  He couldn’t.  "She’s nobody.", he said almost whispering.  He then fixed his eyes on Kristin.  He wished so bad, that it was Sky standing in front of him.  He didn’t say a word as he walked up to her and pressed his body against hers.  "Jeff?", Kristin said amazed at what he was doing.  "Shhhhh.", he said as he pressed  his lips against hers.  He knew she wasn’t the one he wanted, but he needed someone to heal his heart.  Someone to take away the pain.  He pulled her into the bedroom, kissing and groping the whole way.  He closed his eyes and pretended she was Sky.  He gave her what she wanted, with such intensity, such emotion.  If she had only known that it wasn’t meant for her.  When they were done, he rolled over not saying a word.  Kristin curled her body up to his and put her arm over him.  "I love you.", she whispered to him.  He didn’t answer as he pretended to be asleep.  A tear fell from his eye.  It wasn’t long until she contently drifted off to dream.  He laid there thinking only of Sky.  He filled with disgust as he thought of Kristin lying next to him instead.  He couldn’t stay there.  He got out of bed, careful not to wake her.  He got dressed and quietly grabbed his keys from the table.  He got into his car and drove to Matt’s.  All of the lights were out when he got there, so he used his key to let himself in.  He kicked off his shoes and laid down on the couch.  He laid there for hours until sleep finally overcame him.

The next morning

"Jeff…….Jeff…", Matt said trying to shake Jeff awake.  "Huh?", he mumbled as he opened his eyes only enough to realize where he was.  "Kristin just called, but I didn’t know you were here.  She sounded pretty upset.  You might want to call her.", Matt said sitting down next to Jeff who had managed to sit himself up.  "No, I don’t want to call her.", Jeff said trying to wipe the sleep from his eyes.  "What happened?", Matt asked with concern, "Did you tell her?"  "No.  I did the exact opposite.", he said looking sadly at his brother, "I slept with her."  Matt just looked at him in shock.  "Don’t look at me like that.", Jeff said.  "I’m sorry.  I just thought…..", Matt started to say but was interrupted.  "Yeah, well don’t think.", Jeff snapped.  "Jeff, I know it’s none of my business and I should butt out.  But, man, you have to get yourself together.  We fly out tonight  and I need your head to be straight.  I can’t have you getting hurt.", Matt said.  "I know.  I’ll be okay.", Jeff said.  "No you won’t.  You NEED to talk to Kristin.  You need to tell her the truth.  At least that will be one less burden on your mind.", Matt said sternly.  "Okay.  I’ll do it today.", Jeff said.  "You’ll do it now.", Matt said pushing his brother up off of the couch.  "Did anyone ever tell you that you’re a pushy son of a bitch?", Jeff asked sarcastically.  "I think I’ve heard that somewhere before.", Matt said smiling.
