Chapter 15

Sky swam  vigorously across the pool.  Each stroke of her arm grew stronger as she filled with rage.  She was more angry at herself than anyone.  She couldn’t believe that she had been suckered into believing that he was different.  She had bought his sincerity hook, line and sinker.  She had prided herself on being able to see through these kind of things.  Again, she wondered why she couldn’t be more carefree like Josie.  Why she couldn’t treat it like what it was - a good time.  She always took things too seriously and she knew it.  But, she also knew that what she had felt wasn’t false.  That there was something that had drawn the two of them together.   That something, as she would eventually  find out, was stronger than the both of them.  She was drying off when she heard the creaking sound of the back door opening.  Josie walked over and held out the phone towards her, "It’s Jeff.  He says he really needs to talk to you."
"Tell him I’m busy.", she said.
   "She says she’s busy."
"No she’s not.  Make her get on the phone.  Josie, I have to talk to her."
"Are you kidding?  Make her?  That’s funny."
   "Josie…..please."
Josie looked at Sky, "Come on.  Talk to him."  "I said no.", Sky snapped.
   "Sorry, hon.  It’s a no."
"Tell her that I’m not going to stop calling until she talks to me."
"He’s not going to stop calling until you do.", she said getting aggravated.  "Well, then tell him I’ll just change the number.", she balked at her.
"She said she’d just…….NO!  You know what, I’m not going to be the go
between here.  Either you talk to each other or not at all."
She shoved the phone into her sister’s hand and walked back into the house.  "Thanks, Jos.", Sky mumbled as she rolled her eyes.  She took a deep breath and then put the phone to her ear.  But she said nothing.
"Sky?  I know you’re there…I can hear you breathing."
"And I suppose you’d like me to stop?"
"What I want is for you to listen."
   "I’m listening."
Jeff let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you.  Now, I know how this all sounds, but you don’t
   know the whole story."
   "I know you lied."
   "I never lied to you."
"You didn’t tell me you had a girlfriend."
   "You never asked."
Jeff wished that he could take that statement back.  Sky grew angry at his nerve, but tried to keep her cool.
   "I shouldn’t have had to."
"Would you have even gone to the coffee shop with me if you had known."
"Probably not, but you never gave me the opportunity to decide."
"What did you want me to do?  Walk up to you sitting on that curb and say
‘I have a girlfriend, but are you okay?’  I don’t think so."
"You had plenty of opportunities to tell me."
"And believe me, I wanted to.  But, I thought that if I told you, then you
would have said goodbye.  And I didn’t want that."
"Which it turns out is what I’m saying anyway.  Goodbye Jeff."
   "Sky, please don’t."
   "Why?"
"There is something between us and you know it.  Something that I can’t
explain.  Something that makes me want to be near you all of the time."
She knew exactly what he was talking about, but she wasn’t about to admit it to him.
"Well, that’s just not possible now."
"I know I screwed up, but just give me another chance."
"And just where does your girlfriend fit into all of this?"
"We haven’t gotten along for a long time now.  We just are still living
living together out of convenience.  That’s all."
   "You live together!?!"
Sky was becoming more disgusted with the whole situation.
   "Shit.  Sky, let me finish."
"No, let me finish.  I had fun. I let a little too much of myself go, but I had
fun. It’s over, move on Jeff.  That’s what I’m going to do."
"I can’t do that.  My feelings are too strong."
"Well, I’m sorry, but I can.  Have a nice life, Jeff.  Good-bye."
She hung up the phone.  "DAMNIT!", Jeff yelled as he slammed down the phone and looked at his brother, "WHAT?!?!"  "I think now’s the perfect time to break it off with Kristin.  It’s what you’ve been waiting for.", Matt said placing a hand on Jeff’s shoulder.  Jeff sulked for a moment then mumbled, "Why bother."  He turned and walked out of the house and drove home.
