Chapter 15 They both sat silent dangling their feet and staring out at the water.  Jeff put his foot on hers and stopped the swinging motion, "You okay?"  "I’m fine.  How’s Kristin?", Kari asked with genuine concern.  "She’s pissed, but she’ll get over it.", he replied.  "Jeff, how can you say that.  She’s your girlfriend.", Kari asked astonished at his nonchalant attitude about the whole situation.   "She was my girlfriend.  Look, Kari, things haven’t been good for us for awhile now.  I never really loved her and she knew it.  I mean, I care about her, but I think I was with her because I didn’t want to be alone.", he explained.  Kari completely understood.  That is the reason that she had married Tommy in the first place, "And now?"  He grabbed her hand and looked her in the eyes.  "And now I wanna be with you.  Not because I’m lonely, but because I love you."  "But what if I wanna be with you simply because I don’t want to be lonely?", she asked as tears began to fill her eyes.  He thought for a moment then asked, "Do you want to be happy?"  "Yeah.", she answered.  He smiled, "Then I’ll do whatever it takes to make you happy.  If it takes everything that I have in me."  That statement freed Kari’s heart, mind and soul.  It was at that very moment that she knew she loved him.  She knew that she would spend the rest of her life with Jeff.  And she did just that.
