Chapter 9

Jason helped Kari upstairs to her bathroom and then went to get her some ice.  She washed the blood from her face.  Jason returned and handed her a plastic bag full of ice.  She winced in pain as she placed the bag on the side of her head.  "The police are on their way.", he said.  She acknowledged with a nod.  She just wanted to forget the whole incident, but she knew that there was no sense in arguing with Jason.  "We’re up here!", he yelled when he heard the front door slam shut.  They all headed upstairs, but Shea stopped them, "She probably doesn’t want you to see her like this.  Let me go up first."  They did as they were told and waited in the living room.  "Oh, honey!", Shea said bursting into tears when she saw Kari’s battered face.  Kari still hadn’t shed the first tear, it seemed that she was in shock.  Matt stepped into the bathroom, "The police are here."  His eyes widened as he caught a glimpse of Kari’s face.  Her eye had already turned black and he could see the cut on her forehead.  "Thanks.", she said not looking at him.  She slowly made her way down the stairs.  Jason, Shea and Matt followed her.  Jeff was sitting on the couch with his head in his hands.  Amy was sitting next to him trying to comfort him.  "Ms. Knight?", the  policeman asked causing Jeff to look up and see Kari standing there.  "Yes", she mumbled.  "Why don’t you sit down and tell us what happened.", the policeman said pulling a bar stool out for her to sit on.  Jeff listened as Kari told the police every detail of the attack.  With each word that fell from her mouth without emotion, the sickening feeling in the pit of his stomach grew.  The policeman asked her question after question.  "What I want to know is what the hell you are going to do about it?", Jeff demanded as he walked towards the officer.  "Well, if none of you actually saw him do this to her, then all we can do is pick him up for questioning.  It’s her word against his.", he explained.  "That’s Bullshit!", Jeff yelled getting even closer to the officer, "he’s done this to her before.  He’s even been arrested for it.  And you’re gonna tell me that just because we didn’t see him do it, he’ll just walk away scot-free?  Hell no!  I’ll take care of him myself if I have to."  Matt stepped in front of Jeff and placed his hand on Jeff’s chest.  "I think you better just calm down, son.", the officer said.  Jason began to speak, "As you can imagine, we’re all a little upset about what has happened.  What my friend here is trying to say is that I’m sure if you question the bartenders or bouncers at the club, they will tell you that he was there.  And I’m sure that at least one of them saw Tommy follow her into that ally."  "Son, I know how to do my job.  We will handle it from here.  Ms. Knight, we’ll be in touch.", the officer stated.  "Thank you.", Kari said.  Jeff threw his hands up in disgust.  "L.A.’s finest.", Shea spouted as she shut the door behind the officer.  "Can I get you anything?", Amy asked Kari.  "No thanks.  I think I’m just gonna go lie down.", Kari answered.  She turned to go upstairs, but before she did, she said, "I just thank you all for being here."
