Chapter 6 She settled into her seat on the plane and pulled the notebook from her purse. The flight seemed to only last a few minutes as she was enthralled by the words that were written in the book. Matt had been so right in what he said about Jeff. Some how the little boy that she had so fondly called "squirt" had grown into a man that women only dreamed about. There actually was a man that put his feelings into words. A man that felt so deeply and strongly about things and actually admitted it. A man that noticed things like sunsets and actually cared how other people felt. If she had only known that he would have turned out that way, maybe she wouldn’t have left. Maybe she would have stayed in Cameron and waited for him to grow up. "That’s crazy", she thought to herself, "there’s no way that Jeff could be the man of my dreams." But the thought wasn’t as obscure as she had thought and before long, she would come to realize that all too well. She shoved the notebook into her purse when she saw Jason waiting for her at the gate. "Thank god you’re back!", he said hugging her. "I was gone less than 48 hours and you missed me that much?", she asked sarcastically, "maybe I should go away more often." "Very funny. Blake has called a hundred times asking where you were. He’s got some reading he wants you to do for a movie that starts production next month." "You didn’t tell him where I went, did you?", she asked worriedly. "No, of course not.", he said. "Good. I’ll bet it drove him crazy that I didn’t have my cell phone.", she said laughing at the thought of Blake in a sheer panic. Blake McGee was her agent. He was a little wiry, dark haired man who wore thin rimmed glasses. He was the best at his job, but he was a worrier. If Kari wasn’t where he thought she should be or if he thought that she wasn’t presenting the proper image, he went into full panic mode. The poor man ate valium like they were candy. She was sure that he would have a heart attack by the time he was 35. But, she loved him just the same. He always looked out for her career and for that she was grateful. Kari used Jason’s cell phone to call Blake and tell him that she was okay. He cursed her for scaring him half to death and then proceeded to give her all of the information that she needed to know about this new, "to die for", role. After she hung up, Jason asked, "So, did you enjoy your trip to the homeland?" "Let’s just say that it was very enlightening.", she said with a smile. "Well, as long as you got some rest.", he said as they pulled up the long drive in front of her house. "Well, I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I rested. I just learned a lot, that’s all.", she said as she grabbed her suitcase from the trunk. "Want to talk about it?", he asked. "Maybe later.", she said. "Okay.", he answered as they walked into the house. "Honey, I’m home!!!", she yelled with a laugh. "Good!", Shea said from the top of the winding staircase, "Now maybe Blake will leave me alone." "Already taken care of my dear.", she countered with a smile. "So……..how was the trip?", Shea asked, now standing in the room with them. "She doesn’t feel like sharing.", Jason said mocking Kari. "Okay. You really want to know?", she asked. "Well, duh.", Shea said. "I’ll tell you what. Order us up some Chinese food and I’ll tell you both about it over dinner. You know that I can’t tell a good story on an empty stomach.", she said. They both agreed as Jason ordered take out. Jason and Shea listened contentedly as they ate their dinner. Kari filled them in on every little detail. "God Kari, who needs soap operas, when we’ve got you.", Shea said stuffing an egg roll into her mouth. "You know, it would make a great movie.", Jason said. "That’s not enough to make a movie.", Kari stated. "Well, looks like you’ll have to keep the plot going then.", Shea said without missing a beat. "Maybe so.", Kari said causing them all to laugh. Maybe so? She thought about it. She really wouldn’t mind making amends with Jeff - getting to know him again. Letting him know who she was now. Maybe there was something there. Maybe he HAD known all those years ago. After all, he wasn’t a little boy anymore, and she wasn’t a little kid either. If only she could make peace with him, but how?
