Chapter 13 The two girls sat watching the monitor.  They both cringed each time one of the boys took a hard bump.  "You know he’s madly in love with you, don’t you?", Kristin said out of the blue.  Kari didn’t know how to answer her.  She figured the best thing to do was deny it.  "Who?  Squirt?", she asked innocently.  Kristin smiled, "You mean, you DIDN’T know?"   Kari only looked at her blankly.  "Oh, please don’t tell him that I told you.  He’ll kill me.", Kristin begged.  "Don’t worry.  I won’t tell him.  I think you’re wrong, but I won’t tell him just the same.", she said.  "I have to tell you that I came out here because I was worried.  He told me that you had come to the house that day.  And then when I found out they were doing a show out here, well, I was afraid that he would see you.  And I was afraid that he would tell you and that you would fall in love with him too.  But now I see that I was just being obsessively jealous.  You must think I’m some idiot, huh?", Kristin said.  "I don’t think you’re an idiot.  I just think that you love him is all.", Kari replied.  They both smiled at each other.  The guilt was eating away at Kari’s soul.  She knew in her heart what she had to do.  She had to walk away from him.  She could see how much Kristin loved him and she seemed so nice.  She didn’t want to break her heart.  They watched the end of the match.  As Matt and Jeff entered the backstage area, Kristin ran up to Jeff and kissed him asking him if he was okay.  Matt walked over to Kari.  "Everything okay back here?",  Matt asked as he sat in the now vacant seat next to her.  He tried to catch his breath as he looked at her with great concern.  "Just peachy.", she answered with a smirk.  He grabbed her hand, "Come on, let’s go back to the dressing room."  "EEWWWW!  Matt, you’re sweaty.", she said pulling her hand back as she stood up to follow him.  "Oh, you know you love it.", he said with a wicked grin as he then began to rub his sweaty head on her arm.  "You’re sick, you know that?", she said laughing as she pushed him off of her.  "I know.  That’s why you love me so much!", he said laughing.  "I think they like each other.", Kristin said with a smile as she and Jeff turned to follow them.  "Naw, that’s just the way they always act.", he stated uneasily.  "If you say so, but I think you’re wrong.", Kristin quipped.  She was feeling better about the whole situation.  ‘Maybe Jeff has gotten over his feelings.  Maybe, just maybe, he has finally come to realize that he and Kari are just friends.’, Kristin thought to herself.  "You can think what you want to, Kristin, but I KNOW better.", Jeff said growing angry at the thought of Kari with his brother.  "Jeff, why are you getting so mad?  I was only pointing out that…", she started but was interrupted.  "You were only pointing out nothing.  Why did you come out here?  It wasn’t because you wanted to see me. You came out here to check up on me, didn’t you?", Jeff said almost yelling.  "What the hell is wrong with you?", Kristin demanded as the tears began to fill her eyes.  "You’re jealous!", Jeff spouted.  "Jealous of what?", she said, "There’s nothing to be jealous of.  She doesn’t love you, Jeff.  Get that through you’re thick head.  She’s never going to.  Hell, she didn’t even know how you felt until I told her a few minutes ago."   Jeff smiled sarcastically, "Oh she knows all right."  "What’s that suppose to mean?", Kristin asked in a hurt voice, "She told me that she didn’t."  "You forget that she’s an award winning actress.  Trust me, she knows.", he said.  Kari couldn’t speak.  She was shocked at the way Jeff was acting.  She knew that things hadn’t been too great between them lately, but she also knew that she didn’t want to lose him.  So, she dropped the issue and remained quiet as they walked through the door to the dressing room.  Jeff snatched up his duffel bag and headed towards the showers without saying a word to anyone.  Kari saw that something was wrong and quickly returned to the magazine that she was thumbing through.  Matt was in the shower.  Kari could feel Kristin staring a hole into her.  "What?!", Kari asked without taking her eyes off of the book.  "You knew.", Kristin said as she grew more angry.  She had tried so hard to let the subject drop, but she couldn’t.  "Knew what?", Kari asked still trying to deny everything.  Kristin came around the couch to stand in front of her.  "I knew that you were a good actress, but I think you’ve done your best work tonight.", she said.  Kari, still looking at the book, said, "I don’t know what you’re talking about."  "You know damn well what I’m talking about and I want to know what the hell is going on and I want to know right now!", Kristin yelled as she knocked the book out of Kari’s hands.  Kari had tried so hard to control herself.  She had wanted so bad just to forget the whole thing and let her have him.  But now, Kristin had pushed her to react.  Kari stood up and got in Kristin’s  face, "I suggest that you drop it.  I forgive you for that because you are upset, but if you do that again, you’ll be sorry."   Jason and Shea walked into the room just as Kristin said, "Oh yeah?  What are you gonna do, kick my ass?"  "Hey! What’s going on?", Jason demanded as he ran over and put himself between the two girls.  "First you steal my boyfriend and now you’re gonna kick my ass? I don’t think so!", Kristin yelled as she tried to take a swing at Kari from behind Jason.  He grabbed her arm.  Matt walked back into the room, "What’s going on?"  "That’s what I’m trying to find out.", Jason stated.  "This little bitch thinks she’s gonna kick my ass.", Kristin said now getting out of hand.  "I never said that.", Kari said.  "Yeah, right!  Just like you never said that you loved Jeff either.", Kristin spouted.  "That’s right.  I never said that.", Kari said pushing Jason’s hand off of her chest.  Matt walked over to them, "Kristin, just calm down."  "You calm down Matt!", she yelled.  "I’m not going listen to this.", Kari said as she brushed past Matt and out the dressing room door.  Kristin started to follow her, but was stopped by Shea, "I seriously suggest that you stay here."  For some reason, that made Kristin feel threatened and she decided not to follow her.  "I’ll be back.", Shea announced as she exited.           Last Chapter ..*..
