Katie's poem "I Know I Had A Birthday" is a poignant memory of  her teenage years with her father and mother.

The poem is written in free verse in 19 lines.

Some people experience an undesirable event in their life  such as their parents forgetting their birthday.

This poem caught my attention because this poem reminds me of the movie
Sixteen Candles whereby the female character "Mollie" was kind of mad  at her parents because her parents forgot it was her birthday.

Well, Katie is not alone in experiencing this undesirable event like parent/s forgetting their birthday if she watched the movie "Sixteen Candles".

Parent/s who forget the birthday of their children are either too busy or too lazy to remember their children's birthday.  On the other hand, a child could interpret such event as either their parents are forgetful or their parents don't love them.

This poem is interesting because this poem reveals a conflict in Katie's life with her father if the poem is based on Katie's life.

I Know I Had A Birthday         p.34

The Beginning of the Tumbling (2004)

Mom and myself, a wise
two days old, are released
from the hospital. Daddy
wasn't there to pick us up.
I heard mom waited a few
hours, then finally called
someone for a ride. Didn't
mind then. At 14 though,
I found out. At the exact
same time we were just
waiting and waiting, he was
screwing around with one of
his numerous girlfriends. By
this point, all my other blusters
with him were beginning to
bubble around me hard, so I
was orbiting stiff. I haven't
gotten around to asking him
who got my birthday present that day.

Bruce has just finished cleaning the tub
in the house in Pittsburgh I was renting
with some friends while I was in college,
It was a typical weekend night while he
was visiting. We were all getting ready
to go to the club. Everyone was about
half-ready, except I had finished. I went
down the stairs, and as I was making the
right towards the living room, I heard rain-
inside the house. I screamed, "It's raining
in the living room...and on my couch!"
Everyone ran down the stairs as the ceiling
started to collapse down. One final waterfall
and it stopped before the tub had a chance
to fall through. (It stayed in place until the
repairmen came.) I was the only one not
laughing that night because it had stormed
right on my couch, and had the nerve to do
it right in front of my face.

Katie's poem "Centralized Storm" is a free verse consisting of 19 lines.

This poem is about a funny memory during her college life.

The ceiling suddenly gushes  water because the the ceiling suddenly had a hole. It was like rain is pouring inside the living room. The  room above the ceiling was the bathroom. The ceiling started to collapse. It is good thing the bath tub did not fall down.

Funny memories are the spice of life.
