Reflections I would have been an artist, thought of taking up advertising (visual arts and/or photography) or photojournalism (marry my love for writing with photography). My mom didn't want me to die as a media man. Well, with one media man being killed after another in a span of few weeks in 2004, she could have been right. And we are even way past martial law era. My high school principal thought it was a waste of talents to take up visual arts. He encouraged me to take up engineering. I initially did. It was during my stay at the M.I.T. (Mapua Institute of Technology, 1981-1984) that I re-discovered photography and the visual arts. I devoured all the available books in the library because at M.I.T. there were two courses allied in the visual arts - Architecture and Industrial Design. I switched course to Industrial Design and have fallen in love with it but M.I.T. cancelled the program and asked us to transfer to Architecture which I have no love for. *********** My love for the visual arts began when I discovered I can sketch first using a pencil. I later tried my hands on water color. Then, I became interested in designing floor and room layouts, fell in love with color and form. But, the tool that I fell in love with to this day is the SLR camera. This I took from my Dad who kept at home three volumes of POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY magazines. He also bequeathed to me all of his professional cameras - Canon AE-1, Nikon F, and Minolta SRT-102- vintage cameras all. I even worked as a photographer covering fashion events trying to marry documentary photography with glamour as the subject. I finally settled and found myself more comfortable with this category. *********** However when I entered the world of work after completing my Computer Science program, I strayed away from photography. Today, with the advent of camera phones, it re-introduced my love for photography in digital form. Just like documentary photography, digital camera phones allow me to capture a quick moment, a sense of place, a sense of time, and a sense of an event recorded for posterity. The following set of pages listed above is a celebration of my Philippine experience primarily, presented like the chronicles of a tourist, using the Treo 600 camera primarily. I hope that you enjoy the collections. manoftruegod |
