Kui Hua sat in the bedroom, lonely. She was nervous and scared of her new home and her unknown husband. In the meanwhile, she missed her old father, her lovely cousin, her warm family. She wanted to talk to somebody, but surrounding her was silence.
After a long while, Kui Hua picked up a little bit of her bridal veil, peering around the room. A pair of lighted red candles was burning. The melting wax was like the tears of a sad maiden. A plate of peanuts and red candies were put on a tea-tray. This was a symbol of fertility. “I wish to be a happy mother,” Kui Hua thought. When she lost herself in thought, someone walked toward the room. She dropped the veil down quickly and lowered her head.
Tin Ming stepped in. He put a bowl of rice and some roast pork on the small table and sat beside Kui Hua. “Let me see my bride.” Naughtily, he pulled away the veil. Kui Hua was so shy that her face blushed as red as her wedding gown. She did not dare look up. Tin Ming gently lifted her face up and grinned. “Dear, you have a round face and a pair of beautiful big eyes, just like you name Kui Hua- sunflower. May I call you by your nickname Sunflower?” Kui Hua met his boyish eyes and smiled.
“Oh, you must be very
hungry. Come!” Tin Ming pulled her to the small table and let her eat the food.

She planned that if her husband was an opium user or a gambler, she would kill herself with this tool. She had seen the horror of being the wife of an opium user or gambler. But now, secretly, she changed her plan.
