One day a stranger came to Tin Ming's house. He introduced himself as Liu Ta, a friend of Tin Ming's father in San Francisco. Liu Ta brought them a picture and letter from Tin Ming's father.
When Tin Ming read half of the letter, he couldn't continue, but held his mother and cried, "Ma, Father was taken to the hospital...
Kui Hua took the letter with trembling hand and read. Tin Ming's father fell down from the ladder when he was taking down a heavy box that was put on top of a frame. His back was seriously hurt. The doctor said he couldn't work for a long time. Furthermore, the doctor also found a lump in the father's stomach and needed to do some tests.
"Considering this bad situation, Tin Ming's father wants his son to go to Farkei to help him," explained Liu Ta.
Tin Ming's mother's face turned pale. She tenderly stroked her son, then looked at Kui Hua helplessly. A moment later, she said, "I will let Tin Ming go." Tin Ming looked at his mother in great confusion. Kui Hua was so shocked that she needed to hold onto the table to keep her balance. Her heart was bleeding, as if she'd been stabbed by a knife.
Then Liu Ta said he'd helped Tin Ming's father to buy an immigration application form and  a birth certificate from a Chinese man whose name was Chen. Those documents cost a lot of money. They would enable Tin Ming to falsely claim to be Chen's son and so permit him to immigrate to San Francisco. Two months were needed to prepare. Liu Ta would meet Tin Ming in Canton after two months, then they would go to San Francisco by a semi-cargo ship from Hong Kong.
Things happened so suddenly, the whole family was at a loss. Tin Ming's mother wept the whole day. Tin Ming was nervously pacing in his room. He worried about his father, and also he didn't want to leave his lovely wife. Kui Hua, thinking about the separation, was afraid she would collapse.
During the miserable days, Kui Hua thought that she had to play a positive and strong role; otherwise the whole family would fall apart. "Dear Ming, just relax, everything will be fine. Now Papa and Mama need our support," Kui Hua said as calmly as she could, even though she was very sad.
Tin Ming couldn't answer, but hugged his wife tightly.
The departure day came. Kui Hua packed the simple luggage for her husband. She handed him a pair of white pillows on which she had embroidered sunflowers. "Ming, the sunflower turns toward the sun, just as my heart turns toward you forever, my dear." Kui Hua smiled.
Tin Ming held the pillows as tears ran down his face. "Thanks, my Sunflower. I love you" He kissed Kui Hua deeply.
Next morning, Tin Ming knelt in front of his mother and nodded to her three times.
The poor old woman cried, "Oh, my dearest son, when will I see you again?" Her body was shaking like grass in the wind.
Tin Ming let his relatives comfort his mother. Hurriedly, he and Kui Hua left their home, Tin Ming was afraid if he stayed longer, he could not leave his poor mother.
