Ventotene - S. Stefano

 

Ventotene è l'altro Comune del piccolo arcipelago.
Lunga circa 2800 metri, larghezza massima 800 metri, alta nel punto più elevato appena 139 metri (Monte dell'Arco), l'Isola presenta caratteristiche assai diverse da Ponza. Più compatta, denuncia la sua origine vulcanica nelle terre rossastre e brune, coperte da bassa vegetazione e da fichi d' India.
Luogo di esilio per la bella Giulia figlia di Augusto, Agrippina, consorte di Germanico, e Ottavia, sterile moglie di Nerone, conserva resti della villa imperiale presso Punta Eolo. La chiesa, dedicata a S. Candida, è del 1765, su disegno del Winspeare.
Il giro dell' isola riserva piacevoli sorprese, partendo da Punta Eolo (tipiche le basse rocce a taglio verticale, come parallelepipedi); Cala Rossano con il porticciolo per le motonavi, la spiaggetta, le "grotte"; la tufacea Punta del Pertuso, sede del porticciolo romano, con banchine sormontate da suggestivi archi naturali pure di tufo; la spiaggetta di Cala Nave con i due scogli della Nave di Terra e della Nave di Fuori; la Punta dell' Arco, Punta Pascone, Cala Parata Grande, con un'altra spiaggetta, gli Scogli degli Sconcigli.
Il pittoresco ridente abitato costituisce con i suoi chiari colori un esempio di insediamento mediterraneo, semplice e lindo. Collegamenti: motonavi ed aliscafo da Formia (e Anzio in estate).

Ventotene is another small administrative area in the small archipelago. It is about 1,3/4 miles long, and just over half a mile wide at the widest point; it reaches an altitude of only 4,280 ft at Monte dell' Arco it is quite different in character to Ponza. More compact, its volcanic origin can be seen from the reddish - brown soil, covered with shrubgrowth and cactus.
This is where the beautiful daugther of Augustus, Jiulia Agrippina the wife of Germanicus, and Octavia the barren wife of Nero lived in exile. The remainds of imperial villa stand near Punta Eolo. The church, dedicated to St. Candida, dates back to 1765 and was designed by Winspeare.
A tour around the island will bring many surprise, beginning at Punta Eolo with its typical low vertical rocks in the form of parallelepiped: Gala Rossana, with its tiny port for motorboats the beach, the "grottoes"; the tufa stone at Punta del Pertuso, where the little Roman port was built with its quay - sides topped by attractive natural tufo - stone arches; the tiny beach of Gala Nave with two cliffs called Nave di Terra and Nave di Fuori; then there are Punta dell'Arco, Punta Pascone, Gala Parata Grande with another small beach, and the Sconcigli cliffs.
The charming little town, with its simple clear colours, represents a typical mediterranean settlement. It can be reached from Formia (and Anzio in summer).

Less than half a mile from Ventotene, the name of Santo Stefano has for long been associated with the former prison for life - sentences, long since closed.
The building, which is circular, was built 1794 - 95 by the architect Carpi. The prison buildings are well worth visiting and not only out of curiosity.

Ein Rundgandg um die Insel bringr angenehme Überaschungen. Man startet bei Punta Eolo; typisch sind die roten, senkrecht abfallende Felsen, die wie rectecking ausgehuene Klötze aussehen. Von hier aus gelangt man nach der Bucht Rossano; sie hat einen kleinen Haten für motorboote, einen Strand und rotten. Bei Punta del Pertuso (Tuffstein) liegt ein kleiner Hafen aus der Römerzeit, der auc heute noch für kleine Boote benützt wird.
Uber seinen Kais wölbern sich malerische, natürliche Bogen, ebenfalls aus Tuffstein. Bei Gala Nave stehen die beiden riffe Nave di Terra und Nave di Fuori; auch gibt es hier einen kleinen Strand es folgen: Punta dell'Arco, Punta Pascone, Gala Parata Grande - ebenfalls mit einen Kleinen Strand - und schliesslich die Sconcigli-Riffe. Kaum eine halbe Seemeik von Ventotene entfernt. Der name der Insel wurde jahrelang mit dem Zuchthaus in Verbindung gebracht. Das dreisrunde Gebäude war 1794-95 durch den Architekten Carpi erbaut worden und dient schon lange nicht mehr ais Gefängnis.

Путешествие по острову необычайно приятное: вершина Эоло (типичные низкие скалы в форме параллелепипедов); Cala Rossano с теплоходным причалом, побережье, “гроты”; Punta del Pertuso из туфа, место древнеримской пристани, с впечатляющими природными арками из туфа, переходящими в причалы; побережье Корабельной бухты с двумя скалами: Кораблем земли и Кораблем цветов; Punta dell’Arco, Punta Pascone, бухта Parata Grande с ее побережьем, скалами degli Sconcigli.
Живописный городок своими яркими красками являет собой пример средиземноморского поселения, аккуратного и изящного. Транспорт: теплоходы и судна на подводных крыльях из Формии (летом также - Анцио).

Сан Стефано (S. Stefano)
Расположен в полумиле от Вентотене. В течение долгих лет его название было связано с тюрьмой (круглое здание, построенное в 1794-1795 годах архитектором Карпи). В настоящий момент не функционирует. Помещение исправительной тюрьмы является достопримечательностью, посещаемой туристами.
