Starting at the Riverside Park picnic area, we'll head off to the right (upstream), in the shade of the Canary Island palms, to the Afton Street footbridge.
The shared path (for walkers and cyclists) follows the curves of the river bank, and on a sunny day is bathed in the dappled light of sun shining through the palm trees. Maribyrnong River walking and cycling path, Riverside Park, Essendon

To our left is the river, lined by the palms. On a still day, we can see some lovely reflections.

To our right is a grassy bank rising to the road (The Boulevard), which is a residential street. Soon we approach a small grove of trees at the beginning of the Afton Street footbridge.
