We cross the footbridge, stopping in the middle to take in the views upstream and downstream.
Maribyrnong River looking upstream from Afton Street footbridge, Riverside Park Essendon Upstream the houses of Avondale Heights are faintly visible on the horizon, perched on the rim of the Steele Creek reserve.
Most of the closer land on the left, or west, bank of the river belongs to the Commonwealth Department of Defence and is off limits to the general public.
Downstream is a broad expanse of water flowing gently towards Footscray, lined by trees on both sides. And of course the pylons and power transmission lines! The river here is more or less at its widest.  Maribyrnong River looking downstream from Afton Street footbridge, Riverside Park Essendon
Looking down into the water under the bridge, we can sometimes see large numbers of jelly fish - the river is still tidal at this point.
