The earliest record of our family in Ireland is PATRICK SMITH who was born in County Meath about 1778. He married Mary DALY and they raised 6 boys and 2 girls: PETER, FRANK, THOMAS, JOHN, PATRICK, MICHAEL, BRIDGET and CATHERINE.
PETER SMITH was born June 29, 1813 in County Meath. He married Mary Bridget LAWLESS August 12, 1949 in Jones County, Iowa. Mary Bridget LAWLESS was born August 18, 1834 in County Meath, Parish Moynaltry. PETER died February 3, 1890 and is buried in the Temple Hill Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa. Mary Bridget died November 12, 1917 in Atkinson, Nebraska.
PETER and Mary Bridget raised 6 boys and 5 girls in Iowa: FRANCIS, JOHN, CHRISTOPHER, PATRICK HENRY, PETER JAMES, STEPHEN, ROSE ELLEN, MARY AGNES, CATHERINE, THERESA and LUCY. |

Gertrude and Glen had three sons: Bill, Jack and Bob in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Frances and Ollie had two sons and four daughters: Rosemary, Paul, Eloise, Arnold, Maurna and Mary Ann in Dubuque, Iowa. |

Mary Ann CAHILL married Timothy RYAN. Timothy was Mary E. RYAN's brother. When Timothy died in 1894 she was left to raise two boys William & Paul; and four girls Margaret, Dolly, Catherine & Blanche. So when Mary E. died leaving Francis SMITH to raise two boys and four girls, they combined the two families by marrying and afterward having two more girls, Gertrude and Frances. What a houseful!! |
