At virtually the last minute, we decided we needed a break one weekend in October, and we set our sights on the Winchester Mystery House just outside of San Jose, and a day in Monterey. The former is featured here, along with our pink motel, the "Lovers Point Inn" (I kid you not) and an outdoor-gear-catalog-worthy shot of Laura on the beach at nearby Pacific Grove. The Mystery House, a wild century-old mansion with doors and stairs that go nowhere, is not to be missed. You literally could get lost in it if you didn't know your way around. It was built over 30+ years for an eccentric widow who had no guests (so why the ballroom? who knows?) |
