mark feldman's summer trip - stop #3b baltimore, md - may 25 |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
it might not be the most fashionable city in the world, but baltimore has a lot to offer (in addition to the cicadas) and appeared to be on the upswing. i spent the 25th walking all over downtown baltimore and seeing its essential points of interest.
there is of course what is known as the country's premiere aquarium. no argument here. not only was there an incredible variety of species and an entertaining dolphin show, but the exhibits were presented in very thoughtful and coherent way, leaving me with many disturbing thoughts in my head about we humans plunder the world's various bodies of water... did you know that most of the fish we kill we don't even eat? that's right, we catch immeasurable numbers of inedible fish, unwanted turtles, sea mammals, etc... in our modern massive fishing traps. makes you think...
on a lighter note, i visited edgar allen poe's grave, and then on an actual cheerful note, i visited babe ruth's birthplace then attended a game at modern baseball's taj mahal, oriole park at camden yards. i cannot even begin to describe what a beautiful, nearly perfect park this is. not only is there a picturesque downton backdrop featuring the old b&o railroad building that has been saved and renovated, but it is also a user-friendly park. the variety of food is unparalleled, and they even let you bring outside vendor food in if you balk at the prices. combine that with my $8 upper deck seat, and it's the first time i've managed an evening at the ballpark for under $15 since... well, since i was a kid and it didn't cost me anything at all because my parents paid! in addition, the fascist one way escalators that many modern parks have to keep the "riff-raff" out of the good seats (even if those seats are mostly empty) do not exist here. i easily snuck into a choice field level seat on the first base side. Alas, the evening had one minor blemish - the evil yankees demolished the o's, 11-3. *sigh*
i pose with the babe himself, in my sox cap. together, he and i hit 714 major league home runs. i bet he never turned an unassisted double play though (i did once - i'll tell you about it if you ask).
