mark feldman's summer trip new mexico part 1 - july 1-2

finally, the real adventure into the unknown begins!  i've stopped numbering the "stops" because at this point the trip has evolved more into lots of little stops and side trips.

my first 'base' in new mexico was in carlsbad.  after a 9 hour drive from forth worth, i relaxed the first day and journeyed up to roswell.  unbeknownst to me, they were having the annual alien festival!  they really play up the ufo thing here, it creeps its way into local products, billboards, store names, etc...  e.g. "UFO H2O Bottled Water" or "your country music station for roswell, carlsbad, and BEYOND!!"

i checked out the ufo museum, then went to living desert state park, where i got a good intro to the plants and animals that one sees out here - i can now identify creosote, ocotillo, yucca, mesquite, and of course the ever-present prickly pear cactus.  the campground (left) was just a wide open space, kind of different from what i'm used to!  but it had a hot tub, so i didn't complain.
