mark feldman's summer trip
new mexico part 2 - july 3-4
one of the true highlights of the summer trip, carlsbad caverns national park was everything i hoped it would be and much more.  the pictures don't really do it justice.  i spent two days here, exploring all the basic tours, then going on two ranger-led tours, which involved some high-adrenalin crawling and climbing (but didn't require any prior experience).  i highly recommend all of it!
above: me and the "white giant," the final destination of the ranger-led tour on saturday the 3rd.  we crawled through the "corkscrew" (which is a 100% accurate description), climbed what felt like pretty large distances on a ladder and then a rope, went through several "pinches" and emerged into a vast room that brought gandalf and the balrog to mind.  the whole thing was only half a mile round trip, but it took three hours!
