mark feldman's summer trip - stop #1
new york, ny - may 17-20
i arrived in the big apple in the early evening on monday, may 17th, totally exhausted but excited that the great trip had begun.  my lodging for this stop was my uncle ben and aunt frances' beautiful apartment on the upper east side.  the whole gang was there to greet me when i arrived, including my brother jake (who lives in queens).
tuesday the 18th began with a bike ride and visit to jake's house in queens, where i experienced the perils of riding a bike in a mega-metropolis, on a clunky 3-speed with brakes that had a personality all of their own!  it was ben, however, who got not one but TWO flat tires.  later on tuesday i had coffee with my cousin tova and then dinner / ice cream with my college friend claire and her boyfriend  (that's claire with me on the left).
jon apologizes to fish for eating friend (that's a family joke so don't worry if you don't get it!)
wednesday the 19th included some hardcore big apple experiences.  my brother jon and i checked out the biennial exhibition at the whitney museum (highlighted by jon's immediate recognition of the CLOUDS from the video game super mario brothers, which were projected onto a screen as an exhibit).  we then sampled the "soup dumplings" at joe's shanghai restaurant in chinatown.  jon showed me his spacious 400 sq ft greenwich village pad, and then the rain cleared up just in time for a ballgame at shea stadium!
shea is a cavernous '60s ballpark mostly devoid of ambiance - the roaring laguardia jets are its only unique feature - still, the beer was good and the company was first-rate, and it was a tense, vintage national league pitchers' duel between the mets' steve trachsel and the cards' jeff suppan - the cardinals prevailed, 1-0, thanks to a key edgar renteria stolen base.
