mark feldman's summer trip
zion national park - july 28
i can't say enough good things about zion.  majestic rocks rise like cathedrals over the main canyon.  the road through is only open to the shuttle buses run by the park, so noise and congestion are non-existent.
above: checkerboard mesa.  right: "darth vader" rock (can you see him?)  below: the road into zion with its colorful views and wild switchbacks.  below left: "walter's wiggles," a series of switchbacks on the way up to angel's landing (more on that below)
the highlight of my zion experience was undoubtedly the hike to angel's landing, the cliff-like rock you see above and left.  it was only 5 miles, but it was the most hair-raising 5 miles you can imagine, with 1500 foot dropoffs on either side of you!  (such as the one shown far left.  don't worry, mom and dad, the footing was real good all the way!)  below left is a look back at the trail, to give you some idea of it.  i also hiked to the emerald pools and a little bit of "the narrows."  i almost decided to stay another day, but the grand canyon awaited me, starting with the north rim...
