Christmas Time

Chapter One
Christmas fever was in the air. Every town and city in the state of Colorado were decorated with lights, ribbons and huge ornaments that hung from trees, light posts and others. Almost every neighborhood and house were covered with different light decorations and lawn ornaments with each house or neighborhood trying to out-decorate the next one. The ski resorts in the good ‘ole Rocky Mountains were crowded with people from in-state and out-of-state either visiting relatives or just getting some runs in before the holiday season came. Every store and shop had their Christmas Sales, hoping people will come to theirs to do their Christmas shopping for loved ones.

Outside, snow fell lightly and made everything look like something that would be on a postcard. People were dressed up in layers with their hates, gloves, heavy coats and scarves. The cold weather made everyone look happier, making their noses and cheeks a cherry red color. Children played in the front yard making snow angels or snowmen while the adults either stayed inside watching the kids from the window, sipping at their hot chocolate or coffee or out doing their Christmas shopping before all the good presents were sold out. That was what two particular women were doing that one fine December afternoon.

Two women, in their early twenties were walking in the huge Southwest Plaza mall, looking for gifts for their loved ones.

“Hey, should I get this for Mark?” Asked the brunette with hazel eyes.

“I don’t know. I thought he didn’t like hockey?” The black-haired one replied.

“He doesn’t. But I love hockey and I think it’s cool.” The brunette grinned.

“Sarah! You get Mark what he would like, not something you would like.”

“I’m sorry! It’s just so darn cool! Look at it! It has every player from the Avalanche! Look, there’s Roy, Sakic, Blake, Drury and Nieminen! It has Nieminen Arlet, don’t tell this isn’t cool!”

“It’s cool alright. And I will admit, I want it myself but we’re here to shop for others. The only thing we got so far are stuff for our moms. We still got our dads, our brothers, my  sister, your boyfriend Mark...”

“You mean fiance.” Sarah interrupted.

“Whatever. But anyways, that’s not even half of the people we need to shop for! So, after we find stuff for them, we can do a little shopping for ourselves.”

“Fine. Let’s go.” Sarah said, reluctantly putting down the item. “So, you’re not going to get something for Derek?”

Arlet frowned. “I don’t know. I really don’t want to see him again. It’ll be too hard.”

“I know but you guys need to talk things out. You guys don’t need to start dating again, just talk things out. I mean, especially when Derek is Mark’s best friend and you’re my best friend, we want you two to work things out and at least become friends again.”

“Sarah, you don’t understand. It’s hard. I was totally in love with the guy and I was ready to settle down with him but then be pulled his ‘I want to take a break’ crap again. We’ve known each other since I was a freshman in high school and we’ve been dating since then and do you know how many times we’ve been on-and-off again?”

Sarah shook her head.

“Like ten times! And I’m not exaggerating. Ten freakin’ times he pulled his ‘I want to take a break’ shit on me! He doesn’t seem to know what he wants and I can’t take it anymore. I’m sick and tired of his bullshit.”

“Wow, you’re cussing. You must be frustrated.” Sarah responded.

“To say the least.”

“Look, I’m sorry. I just want to see two of my all-time best friends work things out. I don’t want to see you two not getting along. It makes me sad when you two aren’t talking to each other.”

“Can we not talk about this? It’s Christmas and I don’t want this Christmas to suck so let’s change the subject.” Arlet told her quickly.

Sarah sighed. “Alright. So, what do you want from Santa this year?”

Arlet took in a deep breath. “To find someone I can actually spend the rest of my life with.”
