Christmas Time

Chapter Three
“What? Who are they? Do I even know who these people are? Why are they coming?” Sarah heard her best friend say from the kitchen. Arlet was talking on the phone with her mom. “Tomorrow? Wait, why do I have to pick them up? I don’t even know what they look like! What do you mean I’ll know? Mom, wait! Don’t hang up, wait no...”

“She hung up?” Sarah asked walking into the kitchen.

“Yeah. I can’t believe this.” Arlet said frustrated, putting down the phone.

“What’s the matter?”

“My mom said that we’re going to have some family coming to stay with us for Christmas. She wants me to go pick them up tomorrow from DIA at around six or something and I don’t even know who these people are. She said I’ll know but I don’t understand what she means by that.”

“That’s sucks. I’m sorry.”

“Yeah. Anyways, when are you leaving to go up to Vail with your family?”

“Tomorrow morning. I might be gone when you wake up.”

“You’re going to have loads of fun. I wish I was going snowboarding for Christmas; instead I have to spend it with some mystery family I don’t even know.”

“Oh well. What can you do about it? So, are you going to stay at your parents’ house?”

“Yeah, I think so. I don’t really have much to do around here and besides, my mom would probably want me to stay with them for the holidays.”

“Well, at least you get to see your new niece. Jennifer and Dave are coming, right?”

“Yeah, I’m excited about that. I can’t wait to see my new niece, Rachel.” Arlet responded, her eyes lit up.

“Well, on Christmas Day, I’m heading back down here after we open gifts and everything so I might swing around your parents’ place and visit.”

“You coming down to see Mark?”

“Yep.”

“That’s cool. Derek’s staying with him for Christmas, isn’t he?” Arlet asked, somewhat melancholy.

“Yeah.” Sarah replied, cautiously.

Arlet just nodded.

The two women just sat there, one drawing circles with her index finger on the kitchen counter while the other watched. After several minutes passed, the door bell rang. Both women jumped. They weren’t expecting anyone but got up anyways. Arlet went into the living room while Sarah opened the door.

“Mark! What a surprise! Oh, they’re beautiful. Thank you so much. Oh, Derek, how are you?” Arlet heard Sarah say at the door. She took in a deep breath, held it for a little bit then released it.

“Hey Arlet.” Said the familiar voice in front of her.

She looked up to the face of her ex-boyfriend. He had a small, sad smile on his lips and his dark eyes were just as sad. His black hair, slightly messy as if he just woke up from a short nap, were covering his eyes just a little.

“Hey.” Arlet returned.

“How are you?” Derek asked sitting down next to her.

“Fine. You?”

“Okay. Look, I just want to say I’m-”

“I don’t want to hear it.” Arlet interrupted. She lifted her hand up to signal him to stop. Derek surprised by her actions, stopped. “I don’t want to hear your excuses. I’m sick and tired of them. I know you what you’re about to say next and I don’t want to hear it.”

“But I did some thinking and I realized I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” He pleaded, reaching for her hand. She pulled away.

“Yeah, that’s what you said the last time. I’m sorry but I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with someone who isn’t sure of themselves. I’m sorry.” She got up from her seat and walked up the stairs of the house she shared with Sarah. Arlet walked into her room, shut the door and leaned up against it. Surprisingly she wasn’t sad, mad, upset or angry. A small smile twitched the side of her mouth. She felt relieved, free and happy. Knowing that, she moved away from the door and started packing for her parents’ house.
