02/06/02: Marta & Mariajo have lost her 2nd round doubles match to Japan's Sugiyama & Fujiwara 6-4 6-2. Anyway it's so good to see our two favourite players playing together, isn't it?. Now Marta will play in Vienna & Maria Jose will go to Tashken. Go girls, you rule!!
30/05/02: Marta has said goodbye in singles, but anyway she has mde history in this tournament as she became the 1st player to defeat 3 times champion and former 1 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the 1st round and 6-0 6-1. It was a brilliant match by Marta who played a perfect tennins giving no chances to Arantxa who was not able to damage Marta's play. In the 2nd round Marta showed her other side, that which plays a bad tennis as she had not chance against Russia's Vera Zvonavera losing 6-2 6-1. The good news also came from doubles, where our girls are playing together again yay!! and they won their 1st round match defeating Amelie Mauresmo and Emilie Loit 2-6 6-1 8-6. 24/05/02: Marta could not beat Seles, although she had some chances. Marta played a great first set, having leads at 4-2 and serving for the set at 5-4, but she could not hold her nerves and after losing the 1st set she was not match for Seles losing 7-5 6-2. In doubles Eva Bes withdrew so Marta will travell now to Roland Garros, where we have not good news, as Mariajo has been defeated in the 1st round at the qualifying by Lenka Necmekova 6-3 6-2. In the main draw Marta has got so a tough oponent, 3 time champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. Best of luck Marta!!
20/05/02: Marta yes, Mariajo no. Two different sides for our players today in Madrid. Maria Jose lost to Reeves 6-3 6-0 while Marta won Lamade 5-7 6-3 6-2 and now she will face Monica Seles!!!. In doubles Marta plays with Eva Bes. Go against Seles Marta!!!
19/05/02: Mariajo has won two matches in the qualifying at Madrid. She defeated Arancha Parra in the 1st round 7-5 7-5 and Jorgina Cravero 6-1 6-3 in the 2nd round. Now she will face Samantha Reeves for a place in the main draw, where is also Marta, who will face Lamade. Best of luck girls!!
17/05/02: The week has not been good at all for our girls, who were playing at Rome. In singles Mariajo was defeated in the qualifying by in-form Asa Svensson, while Marta was able to pass the qualifying round, but lost again in the 1st round against Anna Kournikova. In doubles our girls were playing together again :D! but they lost in the 1st round against the veteran Navratilova and Zvereva 1-6 6-1 6-4. Next week they will play in Madrid.
07/05/02: Marta has been defeated at singles & doubles in Berlin. Maleeva defeated Marta in a tied match 6-1 1-6 7-6 (5) while in doubles Marta & Rossana were defeated 6-7 7-5 6-1 by Callens & Rubin. Marta will play next week at Rome.
05/05/02: Marta has passed the qualifying at Berlin playing two matches in a row today, defeating Nina Dubbers 6-4 6-1 and Antonella Serra Zanetti 6-2 6-2. In the main draw she will face Magdalena Maleeva. In doubles Marta plays today with de los Rios against Callens/Rubin. Best of luck Marta!!
04/05/02: Marta & Eva lost in the doubles semifinales to Sanchez Vicario & Hantuchova 6-2 4-6 6-3. Marta & Eva reached the semis after Martinez & Dokic pulled out. Marta will reach the top 100 in doubles with this result. Marta will play now the qualifying at Berlin. Good luck girl!!
01/05/02 : Marta has been defeated in the 1st round at Hamburg by Daniela Hantuchova 6-1 6-1. Marta had passed the qualifying round defeating Maria Geznenge & Gala Leon. In doubles Marta plays with Spain's Eva Bes and have won their 1st match against Leon/Tarabini 6-4 6-2.
28/04/02: After the bad results in the last weeks Marta has won again in the qualifying at Hamburg. She has defeated Antoaneta Pandjarova 6-2 6-2. This is the 1st clay win of the season for Marta. She will face now in the 2nd round Schnitzer or Serra-Zanetti. Way to go Marta!!.
11/04/02: It has not been a good week either.... Our players didnt get a win in Estoril or Amelia Island. Mariajo was surprised by Tzipora Obziler 6-3 6-1 in the 1st round of the qualifying at Estoril, while in doubles lost to Oremans / Boogert 6-2 7-6 with Magüi Serna. By the way Marta lost to Tathiana Garbin in the 1st round at Amelia Island 6-3 3-6 6-3..... Lets hope they get better results in the future.. Come on!
02/04/02 : Mariajo has not had a good start in the clay season. She has been defeated in singles and doubles at Porto... in doubles she lost to Gisela Riera & Raluca Sandu 3-6 6-3 6-1 partnering Zsofia Gubacsi, while in singles she lost to Emelie Loit 3-6 6-2 6-2.... Come on Mariajo, wake up!!
23/03/02 : Marta has not had a good day today... she was easily defeated by Tamarien Tanasugarn 6-4 6-1. Tamarine was leading 5-1 but Marta came back to 5-4, but she could not hold her serve, and that was the ned for Marta who only won 1 of the last 8 games. Thanks God clay is back!!
21/03/02 : Marta backs to court with an easily win!!. Marta is playing at Miami this week, and her debut could not be better. Marta played a solid game to oust Selima Sfar in two easily sets by 6-2 6-2. In the 2nd round Marta will face Tamarine Tanasugarn. By the way, Mariajo is not playing this tournament, a very strange decision... but we will see the reasons. Anyway best of luck Marta!!.
11/03/02 : So sad.... If 2 weeks ago was Mariajo who lost a match after having match point, this time was Marta who could not close a match that she had won. Marta was always leading her match against Amanda Coetzer. She was leading 6-4 5-4 and serving for the match, but after she had 2 match points, Amanda broke her and there was more story. Marta lost 9 games in a row losing the best chance of her career to beat a top player... 4-6 7-5 6-0 for Amanda... The next of Marta & Mariajo in Miami...
09/02/02 : Marta is in the third round!!!. She has defeated Francesa Schiavone in two great sets 6-4 6-3. It wasa very good match by Marta, who saw how her opponent broke her serve at 3-3 to lead 4-3. But Marta broke back in the next game and served out to a 5-4 lead. Then Schiavone lost her serve again giving Marta the 1st set. In the 2nd Francesca took an early lead with 3-1, but that was all. Marta won 5 games in a row to complete a 6-4 6-3 win. In the next round she will face South Africa's Amanda Cotzer. In doubles Mariajo & Rita lost 6-4 6-4 against Ai Sugiyama & Elena Tatarkova, from Japan & Ukranie Way to go Marta!!
08/02/02 : Marta has won her 1st singles match!!. She was totally in control against her australian rival, Rachel McQuillan. It was a tied 1st set bith both players losing their service game, but in the end Marta could get it 6-4. In the second set Marta reached easily a 5-1 lead, but Rachel fought back to 5-3 but Marta broke again to win the match 6-4 6-3. In the next round she will face Italy's Francesca Schiavone. Mariajo plays doubles today. Go girls!!.
06/03/02 : Maria Jose has been stopped again in the 2nd round of the qualifying, this time by Germany's Angelika Roesch 6-4 6-4. In doubles Mariajo is palying this week with Italy's Rita Grande. Marta is not playing doubles this week.
05/03/02 : Indian Wells has begun with good results for our girls. Mariajo has won her 1st singles match in the qualifying beating Andrea Glass from Germany 4-6 6-3 6-3. In the main draw, Marta will face australian Rachel McQuillan. Good luck girls!!.
28/02/02 : Well they could not win, but at least they have had played together. Cara Black & Elena Likhovsteva stopped them 6-3 7-6 (4) in the 2nd round. Anyway it was not an easy match for one of the best doubles couples in the world. Marta y Mariajo will play next week at Indian Wells.
27/02/02 : What a dissappointed defeat for Marta, she just could win 3 games against French qualifier Stephanie Forentz who won 6-2 6-1. In doubles Marta & Maria jose play their 2nd round match against Elena Likhovsteva and Cara Black. Best of luck girls!!
26/02/02 : They did! Marta & Mariajo won their 1st match together defeating 6-4 6-2 Schett & Serna. It was a pretty good win for them and i think that this secures them playing next tournaments together. Marta faces Stephanie Forentz, a qualifier, in singles today. Way to go Marta!!
25/02/02 : All can't be good. Mariajo has lost one of her sadest matches in her career in the 2nd round of the qualifying at Scottsdale. The spaniard lost 5-7 6-3 7-6 to Alina Jidkova after she wasted a 5-3 lead in the last set and a match point at 5-4. Mariajo's next singles tournament will be Indian Wells. In doubles she and Marta play today against Serna/Schett. Best of luck in your 1st WTA match together!!. By the way, congratulations to Venus Williams from "Marta & Mariajo" for her #1.
24/02/02 : Personally this is one of the most exciting days for me since I follow tennis. Some years ago Marta and Mariajo became my favorite players and since then I always have been cheering for them and I enjoyed their victories and saddened their defeats. But always with illusion and dreaming about their triumphs and their profits. Then, this week one of my dreams is going to come true and it is that both will play doubles together. It will not be the first time, since they had played once in ITF, but this is different... Their debut will be against another Spanish, Magüi Serna, and the Austrian Barbara Schett. Best of luck!!
23/02/02 : Maria Jose tastes win again!! She has won her 1st match at the qualy in Scottsdale, defeating english Lucie Ahl 7-6 6-1! Its the 2nd win of Mariajo in the year and her 1st tournament since the Australian Open. Marta plays a qualifier in the 1st round at the main draw. Go girls!!
12/02/02 : Desaster in Antwerp. Marta has left the belgian tournament without a win. On Monday she lost in doubles partnering Viginie Razzano from France against Rossana de los Rios and Caroline Dhenin (Par/Fra) 6-4 2-6 7-6 and today Marta has lost in the 1st round of singles against Italy's Silvia Farina who won very comfortably 6-1 6-2...Next for Marta will be Acapuclo or Scottsdale.
08/02/02 : Marta will play next week at Antwerp. She will play in the main draw so she doesn't need to pass the qualifying. She will play Silvia Farina from Italy in the first round. Go Marta!!.
06/02/02 : It's not being a good year for Marta in doubles. She has lost again in the 1st round with Eva Bes from Spain. They were defeated by Elena Dementieva & Jannette Husarova (Rus/Svk) 6-4 6-3. I'm still praying for a Marta/Mariajo team....Next tournament for Marta will be Antwerp.
06/02/02 : Marta will play today her 1st doubles match at Paris. She is playing with a new doubles partner, Eva Bes. They will face a tought rivals as they are playing Elena Dementieva & Jannette Husarova... Let's wish the best for our girls!! Glad to see Marta playing doubles more and more...
04/02/02 : The run has ended. Marta has been defeated in straight sets by Emmanuelle Gagliardi 6-2 6-4. It's a bad defeat as Marta had defeated her before...but anyway is good to see Marta playing indoor tournaments and winning at least 1 match. Good luck for next Marta!!
03/02/02 : Marta has won her 1st singles match of the qualifying at Paris. The spaniard demostrated how she si improving in this kind of surfaces beating croatian Maja Palaversic 6-3 6-4. Her next rival will be swiss Emmanuelle Gagliardi, who was defeated by Marta at the Oz Open 1 year ago. Good luck Marta!!.

20/01/02 : It's not been a good day for our girls in Melbourne. Maria Jose & Anabel had to withdraw from the doubles competition after Anabel Medina Garrigues fell over during her match on Rod Laver Arena against Monica Seles and was forced to retire due to a knee injury soon after. The young Spaniard had raced away to a 2-0 lead in the first set before the former world No.1 recovered and reeled off the next three straight games to stand at 3-2. Medina Garrigues then tumbled over in the last point of the sixth game, and lay in agony, unable to move, on the court for five minutes while the trainer attended to her. The distraught Spaniard tried valiantly to return to the game, but waved the white flag after hobbling through the next two points. Seles was leading 4-2 30-0 when Medina Garrigues decided to stop playing. The match had been in progress 33 minutes. She shook the American's hand before collapsing into her courtside chair and weeping. It was not a good end for the 1st Grand Slam of the year... Anabel will out of the courts 4 or 6 months so Mariajo will have to find a new partner for doubles and Marta could be a good selection. Marta and Mariajo have commited for the qualy at Paris and Antwerp & Scottsdale, while Marta will play also the main draw at Acapulco & Indian Wells and Maria Jose has to play the qualy at Indian Wells too.
17/01/02 : It could not be. Marta has been defeated by Justine Henin in a though match 6-3 3-6 6-1. Marta played very well, but in the last stage of the match was Justine who knew how to finish it. The 1st set was determinated by the lose of 2 consecutive serves of Marta. That gave Justine the enough lead that she kept to win the set. But Marta continued playing her game, very agressive and going for each ball hitted by Justine. Marta got the break in the fifth game to get a 4-2 lead but Henin broke back. Anyway it was not enough for Justine beacuse Marta was being the best player at that moment as she could close the set 6-3. The 1st game of the last set was decisive. Marta had a break point but she could not win it. By winning that game Justine increased her confidence while Marta started to lose concentration. The last games were one-sided as Marta could not do nothing to stop Henin who finally won 6-3 3-6 6-1. Anyway it was a great performance by Marta who is improving day by day. There were not only bad new from Melbourne, as Mariajo & Anabel started with a win their doubles tournament, defeating local women McShea & McQuillan 6-4 6-4. They will face Alicia Molik & Eleni Daniilidou (Aus/Gre) in the next round. Vamos!!

16/01/02 : Marta & Cristina have lost in doubles. The spaniards couldn't do anything againts australian Wheleer & Barclay, losing easily 6-3 6-3. Marta will play her singles match against Justine Henin today. It will be played at the Rod Lvaer Arena in the 2nd turn. María Jose & Anabel begin their doubles tournament today, facing local hope McShea & McQuillan in the 1st turn of the court 19. Good luck girls, specially Marta against Justine Henin!!
15/01/02 : The start of our players in this Open has given 2 different sides. Marta had not problems to save her match against Gersi, defeating her 6-4 6-2. The spaniard got less winners than her rival, 12 by 23 of Gersi, but she played a better game making few unforced errors 12, while Gersi scored a total of 43 ue. Marta must play in this way, making few unforced errors if she wants to beat her next opponent, Justine Henin from Belguim, who defeated her at Estoril last year. However, Mariajo could not do anything against Cindy Watson who was too good for our girl. Mariajo played an awful game with too much unforced errors 36, 10 more than Watson, who scored also more winners 17 against 13 by Martinez. A very demoralazing lose, and there are now 5 months since the last win of Mariajo in a main draw...let's hope better results in doubles, competition which starts today , with Marta in the schedule. She will play in the 3rd turn of the court 11 with Torrens as partner and facing Wheleer & Barclay. Good luck girl!!.
14/01/02 : Marta & Mariajo make their debut today in the singles competition. Marta, who is facin cze Adriana Gersi, will play her match on court 13 while Mariajo, who has to play local wild card Cindy Watson, will play her match on court 19, at 10.00 am local time. The doublws draw has been also made, and it has give tough draws for our players. Marta who has Cristina Torrens as partner will play against Mariajo/Anabel's twings last week, local hope Wheleer & Barclay, while Maria Jose & Anabel will make debut against McShea & McQuillan, a local hope too. 10/01/02 : The Aus Open draw is out and it has give some incredible matches in the first round. Conchita Martinez vs Serena Williams, Arantxa Sanchez vs Iva Majoli & Justine Henin vs Anna Kournikova are the top matches in the 1st round. About our players they have got an easy 1st match, as Marta will face Adriana Gersi (Cze) while Mariajo plays local wild card Cindy Watson. They should not have problems to win these matches at the AUS Open'02, so good luck girls!!
10/01/02 : Maria Jose & Anabel have lost in the quarterfinals at the hand os the aussie team Barclay & Wheleer. Our girls won the first set pretty easy 6-2, but there were not more from them in the last two sets, final score was 2-6 6-3 6-3. Good luck in the doubles at Aus Open!!.
09/01/02 : Marta has made her debut in the Hobart tournament, Australia, where she had a loose performance. Marrero won her first match against her countrywoman Gala Leon 7-6 7-5, but in the next round she was demolished by Janette Husarova Svk who defeated her 6-2 6-0, a results that is not a good sign when just left a few days to the Australian Open. In worse way was Mariajo's performance. She continues without a good play, as her results say, losing to russian Anastassia Rodionova 6-3 6-0... lets hope a good draw for our girls in the AUS Open. In doubles Marta lost with Joannette Kruger from South Africa 7-5 6-2 to Cara Black & Nicole Pratt Zim/Aus. On the other hand continues with good results in doubles partnering with Medina. Both players, seeded 4 have passed the 1st match after a quick win over argentinan Diaz Oliva & Krauth. They will face local hope Barclay & Wheeler in the next round. Vamos!!
06/01/02 : Maria Jose has been the first to start the new tennis season. The spaniard played in the Auckland tournament in Australia as her preparation for the first Grand Slam of the year. The spaniard could not pass the qualifying in singles there, losing to Salerni from Argentina 4-6 6-3 6-2. In the first round she defeated Allison Bradshaw from USA 7-6 6-3. In doubles she got better results as she reached with countrywoman Anabel Medina the semifinals with wins over Clarisa Fernandez and Amy Frazier Arg/Usa 6-7 7-6 6-4 and Emmanuelle Gagliardi & Meilen Tu Sui/Usa 6-2 6-1. The spanish couple lost in semis to Henrieta Nagyova & Kveta Hrdlickova Svk/Cze 6-4 6-2. Good luck in Hobart!!
