August 28, 2002

Yesterday we arrived at Kondari Resort.  The drive up was 7 hours long, but as expected, it was a fun time!  We had a few hours to relax and get ready for the big 6,000 people dinner =)  The Tidy Town 2002 Dinner was basically commemorating towns in Queensland that were environmentally exceptional, and it sure was a big deal!  When we entered the hall, we picked up our nametags and were to sit at table 11.  For a while J. and I stood and chatted.  I felt as if standing for a bit was this stupid formality... The good thing was that J. was as much of a stranger as I was at this dinner even though he was to go up on stage and talk for a bit.  There were 10 awards that were presented to various towns.  The meal was quite filling... a 9-course meal!  Everyone at the dinner was drinking loads except J. and I.

Today I went to
Fraser Island - gorgeous place.  (i won't go into much details about island b/c it can be found online)  Lake Birabeen was my favorite part of the whole day =)  The waters were a beautiful light green and fresh bright blue.  The lake is the largest perched lake on the island.  The sand was special as well.  It was 85% silica and great for cleaning teeth, jewelry, etc.  What's interesting about Fraser Island is that it's made exclusively of sand and on the inside of it there is a beautiful rainforest!  Something I found interesting:  In 1770, Captain Cook made 2 observations about Fraser Island in his journal.
1) the island has insufficient freshwater
2) the island has insufficient commercial value

Everyone laughs at him now - yeah right!  I stopped by the
Maheno Shipwreck as well.  The ship was all rusted and the sight was very amazing.
