Sleeping Koalas
August 3, 2002

Right now I'm on the "Wildlife Cruise" on my way back from the "Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary."  Phew... has it been a great day!  The koalas were very cute, and I especially liked the kangaroos!  The koalas were lazy as heck while the kangaroos were extremely friendly.  I cuddled w/koalas and took pics, and I hand fed the kangaroos!  They almost trampled me w/their excitement =)  It should have been the other way around, no?!  The cool breeze feels so nice.

Let me recap... we left North Quay at 10 am, arrived at sanctuary at 11:20, left sanctuary at 1:30... When we returned, I went to the halaal place Z. had told me about (Abra Kebab).  The nice women gave me a discount, but the food absolutely sucked.  Then, I purchased some souvenirs.  Afterwards, I went to an internet cafe and to my horror I had 83 new messages.  While I was frantically running through my emails, a guy came up and started talking to me.  I swear I thought I was losing my mind b/c I couldn't understand a word he was saying.  I know I sometimes have a difficult time understanding ppl here, but this was madness!!!  Finally, he asked me if I knew Arabic.  Duh... I felt so relieved, and as soon as I said U.S. and Pakistan, he left.

Random thought:  Can you believe that Princess Diana died 5 years ago??  Time flies!

Today I saw the most interesting animals.  I saw fruit bats aka flying foxes which have the most complex language after dolphins.  They have 40 different calls and travel 400 km in a week.

The word 'koala' means 'to drink no water' which is partly true since they mostly eat eucalyptus leaves (50% water, 50% highly toxic materials).  Koalas are very lazy looking animals and sleep 18 out of 24 hours a day.
Not only do they sleep but they pose as well ;)
