You want some turtle stories, eh? Well, let's see.... The first time I fed the turtles, two of them were asleep and the super hyper one was, of course, awake. As soon as the 'crazy one' saw food dropping into the top of the aquarium, s/he made a dash -- not to the food, but to the other two turtles. The two sleepy ones were at opposite ends of the aquarium, so this didn't make his job easier. S/he swam to one side and woke Lazybones up by hitting it on the shell with its foot... then, s/he waddled to the other side to wake the tiny one up in the same manner. Watching all this was absolutely amazing. I was surprised at how aware baby turtles could be and how they looked out for each other. This confirmed for me that at least one of my turtles was caring =) On day number 4, the crazy one tried to escape from its aquarium!!! Thank goodness my Mom was at home at 9:30 am and sitting in the family room at that. All of a sudden, she heard a tap, and then she saw something crawling across the carpet. As she turned her head, she was in shock. Crazy turtle was running across the carpet in a mad dash to get under the sofa. Luckily, my Mom caught him right in time... and, I was told this story when I returned home from work that evening. Half the tank has water in it, and there is an opening about two thirds of the way up where the filter latches on. The critter must have jumped on a mountain in the aquarium and then made a nose dive 3 feet down landing on the soft carpet... We still haven't figured out if this was a suicide attempt or a simple accident... Hmm... Don't worry, since then I have made the aquarium even more turtle proof, so now there is no escape in sight.... Mu ha ha ha ha ha =) |
