INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM and COURSE OFFERING CHRISTIAN LIVING Christian living, the core subject at Maryhill College, basically establishes and maintains in the child a basic religious outlook and develops in him attitudes of receptivity to the learning and the practices of the Catholic Church. Learners are guided to give meaning to his experience of security, love , and acceptance and to cope with his own needs and desires in relation to others. Each pupil is encouraged to enrich his mind, seek and study the truths of religion by acquiring s clear understanding of the Holy Scriptures and the sacred traditions of the Catholic Church. SCIENCE Children are born explorers. From birth they reach out for information about the world they have so abruptly entered. Throughout their early years, they develop their own ways of making sense out of millions of objects, motions, and energies they experience. In short, children are natural scientists, they ask questions about nature, from hypothesis, do investigations and formulate explanations. Science instruction at Maryhill Grade School believes that people’s scientific attitudes and skills are of great importance especially in a developing country such as ours. With this in view then Science program aims to develop and cultivate scientific attitudes and skills, as early as possible, in our children. It aims to help students realize that Science is a part of daily life; that knowledge and understanding of our experiment and the application of the knowledge lead to a healthful, happy life. MATHEMATICS The Math Program stresses that learning be centered on understanding through discovery. It begins with the introduction of the learner to basic mathematical relationship at the preparatory level and moves into more complicated concepts of geometry and measurement as the learner progress through the grades. Through the mathematics program, the learner is expected to manipulate the mathematical concepts with his previous learning experiences in the other fields, think creatively using his mathematics learning and develop favorable attitudes towards the mathematical field. LANGUAGE ARTS (English and Filipino) The Language Arts program includes Reading , Language, Spelling, Writing , and Speech. The objectives are classified under the four Major components of listening , speaking, reading and writing. Heavy emphasis is placed on the development of the basic communication and literary skills and expansion of interest as the learner moves up to the succeeding grades. By the time he finishes the whole program in the elementary grades it is expected that the learner has gained reasonable ease, independence, accuracy, and speed in the use of the communication skills coupled with adequate and competent use of the literacy skills in English. It is particularly expected that the learner acquires and share significant Christian values and concepts. CIVIC AND CULTURE This learning deals with the study of the relationship of man society and government; his role, duties and responsibilities, rights and privileges as a citizen in relation to his family, community and nation. It also deals with the development of moral and spiritual values, pride in one’s cultural heritage, nutrition, health habits, social norms and creative self expression through Music, Art and Physical Education. HISTORY/ GEOGRAPHY/CIVICS This area is composed of History, Geography and Civics. It deals with the study of the evolution of human society with individual as the central figure in this process of evolution, i.e.., how people, ideas and events in the past helped shape the present and how man manages the present in order to attain a desired future; and since man is the central figure of the evolution, he must in a supportive society and government, strive to develop his human potentials in order for him to live effectively in his physical, social economic, political and cultural environment. History provides a time continuum of people, problems and achievements, ideas and events in the past that has influenced the present; of changes and modifications in the structure of society brought about by the emergency of new, more and varied opportunities and benefits for the development of human potentials and of the intervention programs of the present society designed to attain a desired future. Geography provides a spatial perspective of man’s physical and socio- economic environment and his ways of adapting to and managing it. It includes physical feature such as land, water forms, climate, demography and adaptation, utilization, conservation improvement. Civics deals with the relationship of man and government , his role, duties and responsibilities and rights and privileges as a citizen. Together with the History and Geography , Civics provides many and varied experiences in which the learner develops feelings of pride, identity and loyalty to the country and to nation transcending his pride in identity and loyalty to his family, tribe or religion.
