Hi Monsieur Ackers

My name is Maggie and I'm almost 5 years old and I'm in Quebec, Canada. I like to see pictures of the diffeent stars (and nebulas) but my question isn't about stars today. I also like to look at bugs and I keep some of them in a glass jar so I can watch them. I also like the Canadian Ducks and there is a duck sanctuary on my way to my grandmother's where I can watch them for the longest time.

Could you tell me what ducks eat?

Also I have a Devil Moth Caterpillar, what do they eat?

Maggie
Hi Maggie.

I'm glad you like looking at the stars. They're not only beautiful,
but very interesting too.

To answer your first question, Ducks eat all kinds of small things - Insects, shrimps, and plants too. Often ducks like to find small creatures to snack on in the mud on the bottom of ponds and lakes. They grab a beak full of mud and shake their heads from side to side in the water.  All the mud gets washed out of the beak, but tiny teeth around the edge of the beak trap any small creatures that might have been hiding in it. Then the duck eats them.

Your Devil Moth caterpiller is probably a Horned Devil catapillar.  It eats the leaves of lots of different trees including:  hickory, walnut, persimmon, sweetgum, sycamore, ash, and. I'm not sure about this, but if it eats sycamore, it probably also eats maple too.  The Horned Devil catapillar will eventually turn into a crysalis, which will hatch into a huge, beautiful bright red Regal Moth.  Keeping caterpillars isn't easy.   It may not live long unless you can keep it in a home that provides for its needs.  A fish tank with a well ventilated lid and layer of earth on the bottom will do.  Half bury some small jars or bottles in the earth and fill them with water, these will act like vases, keeping your caterpillar's food plants fresh (make sure your caterpillar can't fall in them).  It will need fresh bunches of its favorate plants, every few days, and will need to be misted with water from time to time (It will also need to be misted when its a crysalis too, or it will dry up before it gets chance to change into a moth).

Hope I've been some help Maggie.  Have fun.
