topic: i need to know... what are messier objects?? i need it for school, im planning to become a astronomer one day!! thanks!! Vanessa |
Charles Messier (June 26, 1730 - April 12, 1817) was a french astronomer who discovered 20 comets. He was aware that there were a lot of other 'fussy objects' in the night sky that could be confused with comets so, in order to make his life easier, he drew up a catalogue of their positions and numbered them. These became known as messier objects. They vary from star clusters to galaxies and are still often specified by their messier number today. The Great Andromeda Galaxy is known as messier 31 (or m 31) for example. I Hope this answers your question Vanessa. Ackers. |
